Located in Los Angeles’s Hancock Park neighborhood, this scheme combines disparate elements to fulfill needs for private and public entertainment, with a unique phenomenological-based design solution between shelter, environment and user.

The result of combining a 75’ long pool and Cabana in a rear yard is the pool extends inside the Cabana, and part of the swimming experience happens under cover. Each lap is multi-experiential, and the Cabana’s open interior becomes a world of water, sunlight (penetrating through skylights), shadows and swirling reflections from the pool.
The client’s frequent entertaining dictated a design specific yet flexible for many type events.

Primarily for the client’s daily swimming regimen the Olympic-size pool also accommodates weekend family gatherings. A Sun Room designed to precise traditional standards fulfills a need for weekend and holiday gathering space for their large family (enclosed, conditioned space). The need for frequent, highly-attended entertainment space dictated the large patio (uncovered seating) and Cabana (unenclosed, covered) that also accommodates any environmental condition.

Formally, the rectangular shapes embrace the pool, and kinetically mix environmental elements of water, sun and shadow. White tones and smooth surfaces reinforce the combination of water, sun and shadow by increasing brightness and acting as a pure surface for reflected light from the pool. Venetian plaster, limestone decking and Carrara marble are carefully mixed to vary texture, sheen and reflection.
