Georgia Tech’s new Carbon-Neutral Energy Solutions (CNES) Laboratory develops technologies to reduce the earth’s carbon footprint. From design and construction to daily operation, the laboratory seeks to achieve carbon-neutral “net-zero site energy use” (defined as zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually) expressed simply, directly and honestly through a “no frills” design. The lab sets a new standard for sustainable design for buildings of its type by optimizing passive energy technologies, reducing electricity loads, and maximizing the use of renewable energy. It houses a variety of energy research programs requiring large-scale (high-bay) and intermediate-scale (mid-bay) capabilities.

For optimum solar orientation, the building is cut into two long “bars” – one housing the 8,300 SF single-story highbay with a 40-ft-high ceiling, the other houses the 5,000 SF mid-bay topped by an 8,800 SF office space– with a clerestory connecting them. The bars are stretched along the east-west axis, providing long north and south facades. Each component of the building is clearly articulated through form and material. Fenestration along the upper and lower northern façade, along with translucent panels between, define the high-bay space and provide daylight deep into the facility.

Along the southern façade, the mid-bay component is clad mostly in glass that is shaded with an awning carrying crystalline photovoltaic panels. The office space is clad in insulated metal panels. By effectively using several energy-saving designs – including a full photovoltaic (PV) array – the facility can harvest energy on-site and achieve carbon neutrality without purchasing carbon offset credits.

The project is LEED Platinum v3 Certified, exceeding the Gold certification targeted by all new building construction on Georgia Tech’s campus.

The sustainable design and construction achievements of this project are outstanding for any building but even more so when considering the high energy demands of the research spaces and the overall building program. The Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions Laboratory building’s mission, purpose, development, function and existence are truly in alignment.
