Atrium Gerland in Lyon, France by DCB International developer & Soho ArchitectureFebruary 6th, 2013 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: DCB International developer & Soho Architecture Atrium Gerland is located on the south side of Lyon, not far from the Rhone river. The neighborhood is an old industrial site in full change. New office buildings and housing projects are giving a whole new aspect of this part of the city. The land site is located at a crossroad, not far from a subway station and bus stops. The building is entirely occupied by one user : the régional unemployment office (Pole Emploi).
The building is designed around a central glass-roofed atrium, the heart of the project. The main idea was to offer a « bee-hive » concept building where all the employees are potentially in contact with one another. With different floor heights, the project has a dynamic skyline feature and offers various silhouettes. The binary design of the facades alternates rust-iron panels and aluminum cast glass windows. On the east and west facades the fire-security stairways have been put outside. Metallic walk ways offer outside terraces as well as security solutions to get to the stairs. This clever design feature also gives the building an original image, a unique DNA. The project has a HQE BBC certification. The most per-formant features have been installed. The « active » metallic ceiling has water pipes in corp-orated with in hot or refreshed water flows. This solution offers high comfort and low energy consumption. The high insulated facades have 40% of their surfaces as windows. Static metallic meshedsun screens have been put in front of the east, south and west façades so that the sunbeams are blocked, there for reducing air-refreshing needs. Bold architectural design, great interior spaces, high level sustainable values and a wonderful urban location make this project unique. |
