The PCBC is one of the leading building industry conferences in America where excellence and originality are showcased. This year, marking the 50th anniversary of this prestigious award program, Withee Malcolm Architects was recognized for their work in three different categories: Affordable Project—over 30 du/acre, Sustainable Residential Community, and Senior Housing Community. For the Affordable Project and Sustainable Community categories Withee Malcolm received honors for their Vintage Crossings Apartments in Anaheim, California. In the Senior Housing Community category, they were awarded for Del Rey Square in Los Angeles.

“It is always an honor to be among the winners at the Gold Nugget Awards,” said Dan Withee, AIA, founding partner of Withee Malcolm Architects. “We are fortunate to work with exceptional developers and are pleased to share the awards with them. Related Companies of California whose vision of a distinctive, welcoming and sustainable community inspired our work on Vintage Crossings. Working with Thomas Safran & Associates on Del Rey Square we helped deliver on their bold commitment to create much need high quality, affordable housing for vulnerable seniors, including 31 formerly homeless civilians and veterans.”

The Vintage Crossings Apartments embody Withee Malcolm Architects’ fresh thinking in the redevelopment of challenging sites, transforming a former industrial site into a well-planned complex that includes a children’s play area, a swimming pool, a preschool operated by Anaheim School District, and 92 units of two- and three-bedroom units. To foster a sense of both community and privacy, Withee Malcolm reinterpreted the classic California bungalow that includes shingle siding and porches that lead on to mature landscaping and inviting walkways.

Vintage Crossings Apartments is also the first LEED Platinum rated, affordable housing development in the City of Anaheim. This was achieved by using existing infrastructure, the installation of drought-tolerant landscaping, and site stewardship that resulted in at least a 20 percent reduction in water usage. These strategies, paired with energy efficient fixtures and appliance helped the project achieve 40 percent better energy usage than Title 24 standards for low-rise developments.

The Del Rey Square Senior Housing project represents the first affordable development of its kind in over ten years located in an upscale Westside Los Angeles neighborhood. Once again, Withee Malcolm demonstrates its understanding of the challenges of the typology by minimizing the 124-unit complex’s street-level presence stepping back the four-story building to three as the development meets its single family neighbors at the back. Landscaping, including recreational courtyards, further enhances not only the immediate property, but adds to the character of the entire neighborhood as a whole.

The Del Rey community offers amenities and safety features not commonly found in average market-rate apartments. Careful attention to ease of movement is reflected in residents’ direct access from secure parking to ground floor community spaces that include a lounge, game room and kitchenette. All doors slide electronically to make circulation easier for seniors. Second floor amenities include a computer lab, fitness room, media room, and lounge space for relaxation.

Withee Malcolm Architects serves clients in the residential and commercial industrial markets throughout the West from their offices in Torrance, California. For more information on the firm, visit www.witheemalcolm.com
