Article source: Design Blitz The Horton Residence started o! as a simple, rectangular 500 sq ft addition to the owner’s existing 600 sq ft home in west Sebastopol, CA. Originally built in 1942 as a summer home for the family, the house now serves as the client’s primary residence. From the outset it was clear that this project had the potential to be something more than a simple addition, and that the whole house could be transformed into something very special. Among redwoods and in a stunning location adjacent to a seasonal creek, the project o!ered the opportunity to celebrate its setting and create a peaceful retreat for the owners.
During demolition of the existing siding it became clear that existing structure was also in desperate need of attention, and the contractor ultimately re-framed the entire home. The project thus became a radical transformation from humble cabin to modern home. The remodeled interior of the existing house blends seamlessly into the new addition. With modern touches in the aluminum frame windows, cedar siding, and interior finishes, the home is certainly not your average river cabin. All completed on a tight budget (+/- $200/ft) and reflecting the owner’s rustic taste, the style of this home is what Blitz refers to as “cabin chic.” During the day the large windows o!er scenic views of the surrounding redwood trees, while at night the house dissolves to glass above the creek, becoming a lantern as day fades to dusk.
