The new daycare centre in Valby, Copenhagen, is designed to encourage play and learning through various types of experiences. The new building allows the children to activate and embrace all corners of the building; they can engage in active play on the roof or take a quiet break in one of the small niches around the house.

The daycare centre is organised around a central common space, which serves to connect all the various functions of the house: common rooms, workshops and intimate niches, which all relate to and run across the central space. This layout ensures a visually defined and recognisable everyday life for the children in the building, while at the same time allowing for the building to be adapted to the continually changing number of children in all ages.

The building is designed for children, based on their needs. The children should experience the house as safe and recognisable – and at the same time interesting and ever-changing. The imaginative design is filled with oblique angles and windows of various sizes, placed in a random sequence in the facade.

All rooms are different and each offers its own characteristic identity. One room has a particular colour, another a special shape, a third a characteristic skylight etc. This creates experience and at the same time makes it easy for the children to find their way around the building.
