Kawanishi Fam in Kurashiki, Okayama, Japan by TTArchitects

Kawanishi Fam is situated in an industrial estate in close proximity to Kurashiki station. It was originally a warehouse used for roasting coffee, but we renovated it to create an open office space. We used the top floor of the four story warehouse due to the lasting impression of the characteristically shaped ceiling, which takes the same form as the original sloped roofing of the warehouse. This ceiling was the primary motivation for us in deciding to undertake the renovation in its current location.

On the basis of the client’s wishes to support local entrepreneurs and contribute to the vibrancy of the community, we created a concept space which would encourage the free flow of ideas and mutual development between fellow professionals. In this space, the characteristically shaped ceiling creates a symbolic collaborative atmosphere, leading us to remove the original partitions to create a layout with open working areas.

The meeting rooms feature sliding glass doors, thereby maintaining the visual element of transparency and maintaining the wholeness of the space. On the far side of the floor we installed a small wooden volume which includes a utility space, toilet and storage areas.

We hope that in creating Kawanishi Fam that we can provide valuable

support to the entrepreneurial and design/creative industries, helping to harnessing their creativity.
