The Massey Tower by MOD Developments is a 60-storey, luxury condominium currently under construction in Downtown Toronto. It takes its name and design inspiration from nearby Massey Hall, completed in 1894 and cherished today as Toronto’s premier live-music venue. The project’s sales centre by Cecconi Simone is housed within the adjacent Canadian Bank of Commerce building of 1905, a designated building to be restored and integrated into the base of the future high-rise.

The 432 m² sales centre harmonizes period and contemporary design, preserving original, interior elements in situ while extending them with new ones. This sensitive intervention maintains the building’s historical integrity while adapting it to its present-day vocation as a show space.

The refurbished entry area of the former bank, with original mouldings and mosaics, portends the overall interior environment of the upcoming residence. Cocoon-like pendant lights and a custom reception desk in antique mirror and cold-rolled steel are contemporary yet evocative of traditional design.

The expansive main gallery, accessed through velvet swag drapes, is organized into functional zones without partitions. Instead, closing areas, seating areas and scale model are delineated with period-inspired, custom furnishings and mouldings; digitally-generated, trompe-l’oeil, custom wall-coverings; and an elaborate mosaic in-the-round, uncovered during the sales centre’s construction.

The model suite features a thoroughly-modern living environment fused with traditional motifs. Contemporary, custom millwork is ornamented with applied decoration. Custom furniture, antique-looking in silhouette, is simplified for an up-to-date, graphic appearance. Seemingly incongruent design details are unified in a subdued palette, accented with boldly-theatrical flourishes.
