Article source: STUDIO ANDRE PRADIKTHA When i start to develop my home office, i was faced with choices that i must develop a property that in a way is very efficient and sustainable.
The home office was developed on a narrow plot in a quite crowded residential neighborhood, yet by the end of the property, there are rice fields that extent far beyond the plot. I was inspired by one of the 5 principles of architecture by Le Corbusier, ‘Pilotis’, that is to elevate existing land and built right exactly in the displacement The concept of ‘Pilotis’ make possible of an ephemeral concept, that the building seems not even there and the bold elevation of ‘Pilotis’ make wide span through entire width of the plot. The orientation of the building is made to capture the vista of the ricefield in the back, so there are no allowed supporting colums or walls in between the wide span. I was faced with another option to adopt local concept, where this property was built, to the Building. Yet i applied the local concept to the entire landscape. The concept of ‘Natah’ is applied through the property transition between the access road, the building, and the ricefield in the back. The language of solid road represented in the parking area where checker-board style pavement is redefined the concept of solid and void, bridging the transition between the road and the ephemeral building more real. Then the backyard of grass Glass is choosen to be the balustrade between these transitional space and the building to create seamless indoor-outdoor area that still has distinct indoor and outdoor performance. These glass also act as support for the wide span elevated land of ‘Pilotis’. After efficiency, there comes the energy matter. To support the sustainable concept, the property adapt both on grid and off grid power scheme. The 20 200 Watts solar panels located in the elevated land, are ready to support the office activity and the indoor cooling system, while the use of treated water plan and Rain-water-Harvesting are to ensure that the water cycle in the property and beyond is balanced and cover all the activity needs. Beyond functionality, the reason to convert to minimalism for my studio is to the site itself, which drive the development in a path of preserving what is really essential and minimise impact to the natural existing condition.
