Article source: DesignAgency Generator Rome is only a short walk from the Colosseum and Termini Station, in the Esquilino neighbourhood – one of the oldest areas in the city. The property reinvigorates an elegant 20th century residence on Via Principe Amedeo. Its surroundings include cinematic streetscapes, leading to picturesque squares, churches, parks and a vast array of bars, cafés and pizzerias, as well as authentic local markets. DesignAgency took its inspiration from the distinctive flavours of this diverse and historic neighbourhood, as well as the Italian culture and the Roman trade routes that have left their marks on this area to create a vibrant and welcoming environment with subtle ethnic flair.
The lobby is a bright, open and gallery-inspired environment with polished concrete floors, white plaster walls and an inviting reception desk created from Venetian plaster. Modern and cozy seating clusters are featured throughout for group check-ins and waiting guests. The area is also programmed for live music and local art, including a custom mural by famous Italian street artist, Luca Maleonte. The design team sourced vintage oil paintings from local thrift shops to further emphasize the gallery nature of the space. The cafe to the right of reception was conceived as an airy environment, and the perfect spot to enjoy an espresso at one of the large, communal, bluestone topped tables. White wall tiles, oak floors, distressed plaster walls and light bentwood furniture contribute to the inviting nature of the space. To the left, the bar is a complete change of pace from the starkness of the reception. Colourful patterned floors, bottle green wall tiles, a scaled-up palm wall covering and neon orange archways create the background to this eclectic space that has a happening vibe day and night. The warm and sexy corner bistro features bi-folding doors that open to a view of the market across the street. Large, slow-turning wicker ceiling fans and relaxed eclectic furniture form a “throw-back to Havana” open-air industrial styled bar and lounge. A crush of red hanging lanterns adds Asian influence, and conjuring up the Old World in a modern reincarnation. Bistro tables on the sidewalk and large palms play host to a wicked mojito menu and all-day food offerings. Lunching in the summer of 2017, a rooftop terrace will add a relaxed, retro garden patio in the middle of the city, boasting breathtaking views of Rome’s skyline, with vistas of an ancient Roman aqueduct, lively rooftops and the glistening raw industrial steel of the Termini railway station. The rooftop will feature a vibrant colour palette and a classic striped motif. A vintage three-wheeled food truck will function as a temporary bar/snack shack. Striped umbrellas, lemon trees in terra-cotta pots, faux turf and a full scale shuffle board will add to the laid-back, retro feeling of the roof terrace. According to DesignAgency principal Anwar Mekhayech, “We’re excited to add another Generator destination in Italy. In contrast to Venice – a jewel box of riches – Generator Rome is iconic, spare and minimalist, yet still rich with an exciting and ethnic vibe.” ABOUT DESIGNAGENCY DesignAgency is an award-winning Toronto based design consultancy.
