Toi Ohomai Health Sciences Building in Rotorua, New Zealand by MOAA ArchitectsJune 4th, 2017 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: MOAA Architects In 2012, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology held a design competition by invitation for their new Health Sciences Building. MOAA Architects in association with DCA received first prize. Following award of the project, extensive stakeholder consultation began in order to redefine what was a very traditional brief for teaching of specialist nursing education.
The building was the second project in an overall master plan that will see a central boulevard run north/south down the Mokoia campus, following the slope of the site. The Health Sciences Building sits at the head of this boulevard, directly adjacent the campus Marae. The programme consists of teaching spaces, a lecture theatre, student social space, and staff offices. Two simulated wards are designed for flexibility and can have 20 beds set up for teaching bed making, then transformed the next session to a simulated ward consultation with a single bed, group tables and chairs. The goal was to provide a building that was pleasant, provided a stimulating work environment, and would be a place where students want to learn. For teaching staff, all spaces are designed to be open and flexible allowing for blended and technology rich learning. Contact MOAA Architects
