Post Office Site Conversion in Aalst, Belgium by ABSCIS ARCHITECTEN

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Article source: ABSCIS ARCHITECTEN

The former post office site in Aalst was a mixture of industrial buildings of the former ‘Filature du Canal’. The “Filatures& Urban Fabric(s): Masterplan stationsomgeving Aalst” masterplan, designed by the Christian Kieckens Architects, started from a site conversion, whilst keeping the main building of the former mill in the Manchester building along the Vaartstraat. The modifications to this building have been kept to a minimum because of organisational and programmatic interpretation, which corresponds with the scale of the building. The facades have been cleaned and re-pointed and equipped with new outside joinery work after its historical model. The building has been renovated on the inside also, in order for it to comply with current regulations, without however interfering with the warehouse’s authenticity.

Cycling & Pedestrian track Lotus Flower in Massarosa, Italy by MICROSCAPE architecture urban design AA

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Article source: MICROSCAPE architecture urban design AA

The area covered by the project is part of the northern basin of the lake Massacciuccoli; until the 40s of the twentieth century the area was occupied by the cultivation of rice, then replaced in the late ’60s by the Lotus’ Flowers – today one of the largest camp in Europe. The site was in a state of decay and neglected and the public use was denied. Today with the new pedestrian and cycling path it brings to the light a true “environmental jewel” that opens a new scenario in an area unfortunately largely deteriorated by urbanization strongly pervasive and of poor quality. The Cycling & pedestrian track “Lotus Flower”, in its length of 1km, connects the train station of Bozzano to the centre of Massarosa and it is an integral part of the system of the regional cycling routes dedicated to Giacomo Puccini and places related to his life.

Nupera in Beyoğlu, Turkey by Ofist

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Article source: Ofist

Among a few other firms, Nupera takes place in the historical Le Petit Champs appartment building located in Beyoglu, in the bohemian part of Istanbul facing a beautiful view of historical landmarks behind the Galata Bridge. Nupera is an entertainment complex consisting of cafe, restaurant and bars.

We had designed Nupera several times since 2004.  Always the same client, but each time with a different theme, a different concept.  After a break we came together again to create something a bit controversial this time.  Something with less design apprehension…

Casa Siena in Sitges, Spain by Guillem Carrera

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Article source: Guillem Carrera

The site is located in an urban residential low density area surrounded by natural green areas near the sea. A large part of this sector is composed of plots with significant slopes.

The observation of the site and immediate surroundings and distant highlighted that most of the houses that were built or being built in the area followed the same premise: place it in the top of plot – filling the land where the buildings are located, through the widest possible cross-volume, leaving the rest of the site as a garden with difficult use and difficult relationship with the living spaces. Resulting in a disproportionately large number of houses, that are not integrated with the environment.

Kreinbacher Champagne Cellars in Somló, Hungary by Ekler Architect

Wednesday, October 11th, 2017

Article source: Ekler Architect

The champagne making facility is the twin brother of the winery and appears as if it were carved out of the latter’s hill. While different in character, their structures and interiors have much in common. The vegetation covered, reinforced concrete roof of the champagne cellar and its dark grey walls also evoke shapes created by geological forces; the sections and the facades resemble tectonic faults. Its volume creates the impression of freshly rising from the ground. Fermentation takes place underground, processing and administrative work on the ground floor. The large, wide office area overlooks the yard of the plant, while the spacious professional tasting room turns towards the north, offering a view of the hill.

The research for a bright space has been the first intention from the beginning. The second one has been the aim to each an high quality in informal spaces applying care to the construction details and choice of materials. The situation at the beginning of the design process was presented by an apartment with a high degree of obsolescence resulting need to do major renovation work at the level of distribution and systems. From the start has been done a parallel work between architectural design and thermal/acoustic design, this last one directly followed by the client, which is a professional in the sector.
