Randbøllen Daycare Center is an addition to an existing daycare center, implementing the new building in a context with two neighbouring daycares.
The program for the project described an extension that had to be implemented without reducing the free space of the daycare centre too much. The solution was to place the extension elevated above the ground and fit new shed facilities under the building. In this way, the outdoor area is maintained and upgraded, while the building forms intimate, covered spaces at children’s height. The new building adds to the existing, providing a coherent space inside the building, where you experience it as a whole.
By subdividing the group room, the building provides greater intimacy and variety to educational opportunities.
A pleasent acoustic environment is achieved via the use of inclined walls, which mimic natural acoustic reverberations, as well as an integrated acoustic panelling system on the ceiling.
The volume of the building has been carefully considered to maintain and improve the sites existing trees, light conditions. The playground area and recreational space surrounding the building has been equipped with a bike lane, a mini amfi-scene and several niches with sitting possibilities. By keeping the existing copper beech tree, the project achieved sunscreen both for the building and the outdoor areas.
The facade is covered with wooden beams that form a clear, sculptural volume. It was decided early on in the design process that the relatively complex volume should be constructed in a simple wooden construction, to ensure that a minor contractor would be able to to the job.
