Article source: MUDA Architects In July 2018, under the name of “the most beautiful bookstore in Chengdu”, the results of the “Xinglong Lake Bookstore Architectural Creative Design Competition”, sponsored by Chengdu Tianfu New Area Investment Group Co., Ltd. and China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute C o., Ltd .., and co sponsored by Chengdu Yi Zhu Yi Shi Cultur e Communication Co., Ltd. were announced: with total 486 people signed up and 249 conceptual plans received, MUDA Architects stood out from the 20 finalists and won the first prize in the design competition.
Chengdu Tianfu New Area is a crucial region in the development of the ” The Belt and Road ” and the development of the Yangtze River economic belt. In February 2018, the concept of Park City was put forward at the first time. Against such background, the theme of the competition is to create a new city landmark. MUDA A rchitects takes this opportunity to reflect Chengdu’s unique urban temperament and lifestyle through the bookstore design, and showing the greatest respect to the natural environment of Xinglong Lake by drawing an ecological blueprint aiming at “landscape integration and urban symbiosis”. MUDA Architects takes the idea of ” a book falling from the sky” as the starting point of th e story, and the architectural f orm is taken from the form of “book”. Through this metaphor, M UDA A rchitect s hopes that people can truly walk into th is building to read themselves and to complete a journey of self discovery in a peaceful environment. The project is located at the east side of Xinglong Lake Bay Area, with a rectangle of 12m X 39m as the plane foundation, the lowest point of the roof is 3 meters in height, one corner of the building is elevate d to 16 meters, and the other corner 7.5 meters, forming a roof with spiritual symbolization. When the wind lightly patting on the water, the lake surface echoes with the curving roof. The building is linearly expanded according to the site conditions, allowing itself to be connected to the open lake. The choice of a hydrophilic platform that extends out of the water and a glass window that opens on the elevation near the lake all show respect to nature. Space and the natural environment together produce a positive interaction, the building responds to the natural environment in an almost “translucent” way: grassland, trees, wate r, grass, and the gentle, reflecting lake surface. Entering the bookstore from the main entrance, the dimensions of the space are not yet fully displayed only the foreground, several steps and two exhibition walls. Before people can spectacle the entire core area of the building, they can peek the nature gifted lake view through the window on the left. The exhibition entrance area is not designed for books, rather it aims to let people calm down before they continues to the reading area. Passing the exhibition area and walking few steps downstairs, the sunken reading area is hidden behind the wall. Readers can enter the most comfortable reading state by either standing, or leaning, or siting on the steps at will. When the weather is fine, the glass curtain wall on the side of the lake can be expanded. With the window shields open, a row of tables and chairs together form a coffee reading area. This is the nearest area to the lake, with whispering breeze and flying warblers , readers can enjoy reading with , readers can enjoy reading with nature. The meditation area fully takes into account the need of self dialogue. This is a long corridor like space, th e exterior wall opens up with different sizes and shapes of holes which allows natural light to penetrate. The changing time can be sensed with the changing angle of light. Meanwhile the interior wall has a horizontal slender opening, with its level equals to people’s eyes, allowing people to view the lake directly through the window, as if they are outside the building, and within the natural landscape. The conference room and logistics area are lo cated at the end of the building and can be accessed from the periphery of the building. This design ensures the privacy and convenience of the space, and the reading area will not be disturbed either. With neither winding corridors, nor mysterious concealment, the whole space gives the reader unlimited possib ilities, and great physical and mental freedom. MUDA Architects uses architectural language to propose the relationship between man and books, man and nature, and man and space. Within this building, mountains, lake and things are equivalent to people, we regain interest to each other while forgetting ourselves; within this building, people are awaken to face their true self, and to repair the degraded senses.
