Article source: b.earchitecture The Mermaid Beach Residence is a new family home positioned along a surf beach in Queensland’s Gold Coast region, Australia. It has been designed to reflect “a desire to stay and age”. Working with clients with a strong appreciation of concrete, the building was designed primarily of exposed concrete internally, as well as externally, with the addition of operable timber shutters on the external windows to protect against the sun and weather conditions. Bringing together the client’s want for a relaxed, open and sun-drenched costal home, poured in-situ concrete as the primary building material means that protection from the elements could be, quite literally, grounded.
The architecture of the Mermaid Beach signifies permanence, a dialogue between architecture and the intrinsic human desire and emotional need for permanence, or in other words; to put down roots. In contrast, the house itself is situated atop something that is impermanent, the beach; a place of erosion and movement. The project is dotted with solar panels, solar hot water, double glazing, screens for shade and passive cooling and other operable elements to create a coastal home that can respond to its location. The openings and invitation of natural light throughout allows for the texture of the hero material, concrete, to be celebrated and expressed throughout the day, where the building envelope also allows for ledges and shaded eaves for entertaining to occur. The functionality of each space is designed to be dynamic and easily transformed. The top volume of the house that accommodates the first-floor living spaces has been built to slightly overhang the groundlevel volume, forming a sequence of shaded walkways that offer respite from the heat. There are also a couple of greenery-filled internal courtyards where inhabitants can spend time in unfavourable weather conditions. Materials utilised on the exterior of the house have been applied to its internal rooms, which boast concrete surfaces and warm timber flooring. “The primary materials used were a departure from the client’s previous homes aesthetic, so this had to be discussed at length and prototypes made to ensure everyone was comfortable with the proposal,” explained the practice.
