Article source: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects LLP With this project we have had an opportunity to connect the heroic past of a venerable city institution to its promising future. The construction of a new Ambulatory Care Pavilion and the renovation of important medical spaces have substantially transformed the existing hospital complex, serving a wide range of patients, including the poor and indigent, into an advanced medical campus.
The site for the new building was formerly occupied by a multi-level parking garage situated in the front yard of a McKim Mead and White — designed campus. In addition to housing essential medical programs, the new building has become the main entrance for the entire hospital complex, making the architecture of the historic buildings an essential part of the experience of the three and a half million annual visitors. The primary architectural challenge has been the transformation of the close physical proximity between the new and the existing buildings into a place of spatial and symbolic generosity. In bringing together new and old, the glazed atrium has become the emblematic heart of the entire hospital. Visitors arriving beneath a sheltering overhang pass through transparent glass entrances to be presented with an axial view of the original monumental entrance portal. Generous steps and a broad ramp provide access to the granite-floored, 90-foot-high atrium space, the most striking feature of which is the existing brick facade rising through a sloped skylight to its pedimented culmination. Existing ground floor portals have been reopened to provide access to the rest of the hospital complex. The elevators serving the Ambulatory Care building are situated for ease of access and functional flexibility. Each upper floor has public waiting areas arrayed along the curved galleria overlooking the atrium. A series of reception desks is strategically placed to facilitate public interface with the different clinical modules. Patient examination rooms and clinical support spaces are in the zone adjacent to the reception units. The division of the floor plate in three distinct zones – public, service and clinical – optimizes programmatic flexibility and promotes efficiency for the medical community. The series of murals located on each level celebrates the continuity of care, vitality and enthusiasm at the hospital. We recognize that the completion of this building is but a milestone in the storied history of this important institution. Tags: New York Categories: Health Center, Hospital |
