Couldrey House in Brisbane, Australia by Peter Besley

Sunday, June 7th, 2020

Article source: Peter Besley

I designed the Couldrey House for a member of my family in Australia (completed Jan 2020). The house takes an unusual approach to making residential architecture in the Australian landscape. Many houses there tend to hover over the ground with lightweight materials which need re-coating and replacement. I instead designed Couldrey House to spring directly from the subterranean rock and to be made of heavy materials lasting a very long time. The house continues the local tradition of catching cooling breezes with good aspect and a permeable layout, but boosts this with passive radiant cooling from thermal mass; almost unheard of in houses of sub-tropical Australia.

Bigfork High School Renovation and Expansion in Montana by Cushing Terrell

Friday, June 5th, 2020

Article source: Cushing Terrell

Exemplifying a balance of form and function, the Bigfork High School remodel and expansion was driven by the existing site’s unique opportunities, characteristics, and systems. Proper planning, scheduling, budgeting, and careful coordination between design and construction allowed for the school to remain operational with minimal disruption to teaching and learning. In the completed project, a centralized “commons” area is the focal point of design, allowing space for congregation and event spillover, as well as serving as a central access point to new areas like the library, choir/band complex, expanded gym, student store, guidance counselor suite, and additional classrooms.

Lawless Retreat in Jones, Michigan by Searl Lamaster Howe Architects

Thursday, June 4th, 2020

Article source: Searl Lamaster Howe Architects

Jason and Michael had searched five years across four states to find a site for their weekend home that spoke to them. This retreat was to be everything that their Chicago residence – a lofted space nestled within the attic trusses of a converted church – was not. The loft is in the heart of the bustling Wicker Park neighborhood; they sought serenity and a slower pace. The loft features a highly curated collection of sleek European contemporary furnishings; they were inspired by the idea of a sanctuary with a modern sensibility but also rooted in its place with hand craftsmanship felt on scales big and small. The loft’s views of the downtown skyline are finely calibrated to maintain a sense of privacy in the dense neighborhood; they sought an abundance of transparency and a direct connection to nature.

Movieland Palace in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel by Studio samuelov

Thursday, June 4th, 2020

Article source: Studio samuelov

The story behind the design of MOVIELAND is a tribute to the older days of the cinema world. The complex includes 11 movie theaters, among them some rich VIP halls. We chose strong elements and humanity values for the design, and special nostalgic look, which usually aren’t found in large commercial movie theaters. The whole complex gives the feeling of Deja Vu to the dazzling world of 1920’s Hollywood, with the elegance and luxury of the magnificent theaters in Europe of the same period, the golden age of world cinema.
