Central Arizona College in Maricopa, Arizona by SmithGroupJJR

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

Article source: SmithGroupJJR

Known for its history as a pre-railroad stagecoach town, the town of Maricopa has balanced its agricultural and Native American identities for the past century. Most recently Maricopa, a community 40 miles south of Phoenix, has been chronicled by the New York Times as a bedroom community boom town gone bust. Central Arizona College has made an investment in the community and is betting on its future. This campus represents a glimmer of hope in an area struck by the national recession.

Waltham Forest College in London, UK by Platform 5 Architects LLP & Richard Hopkinson Architects

Friday, August 1st, 2014

Article source: Platform 5 Architects LLP & Richard Hopkinson Architects

Phase1

The £3 million project opens up the existing landmark 1930s building to create a new series of formal and informal education and meeting areas, which work as set of interacting horizontal and vertical layered spaces. The intervention of a suspended glazed seminar box within the central learning space, accessed by a slender oak-lined staircase, is the project’s most striking feature. Our team have transformed the previously austere and run-down main spaces in the college to create a welcoming, inclusive and contemporary environment for students, staff and other building users.

This project marks the first phase in the delivery of a strategic masterplan. The success of the project has led to a further commission to carry out the second stage of the masterplan with a £4.9M project.

The Towers at Young Harris College in Georgia by Lord Aeck Sargent

Wednesday, May 28th, 2014

Article source: Lord Aeck Sargent

At Young Harris College, when talking about the institution’s newest residence hall, you could recite the adage, “What’s old is new again,” and on the face of it, you’d be right.

YHC, which less than six years ago began its transition from a two-year to a four-year institution, hired architecture and planning firm Lord Aeck Sargent (LAS) to design the Towers– a 226-bed residence hall that opened in August 2013.

With double occupancy rooms arranged around communal bathrooms and a shared common area, the Towers sounds a lot like a mid-20th century dormitory building. But, there’s a twist.

Article source: Coldefy & Associés Architectes Ubranistes

Collège Lucie Aubrac is the first secondary school in the region to achieve the BBC label (Low Consumption Building). The project is located in the western part of the city of Tourcoing, in a primarily residential neighborhood along with some educational and social amenities. Due to its remarkable location at the edge of the city, along with its tranquil monumentality, the new school adds a new magnitude to the entry to the city. By opening up to two major axes, Industrial Boulevard and the street Fin de la guerre, the new building draws from the best of the natural conditions of the site.
