BOSTON, MASS. Berklee College of Music opened the doors to its 160 Massachusetts Avenue,residence tower in January 2014. The building now features one of the largest, most progressive, and versatile professional audio teaching/production/performance complexes in the U.S. Over three years and $100 million have been invested in the development and construction of this cusp point educational compound. Situated over four dedicated floors in a striking, sixteen-story, 155,000 sq. ft. William Rawn Associates building, the ten-studio Walters-Storyk Design Group – designed, audio education component represents a pinnacle of contemporary studio planning.
The Pomona College Studio Art Hall is a 35,000 square-foot, two-story, interdisciplinary arts center at the heart of the Claremont, Calif., campus, designed to create a physical environment where an appreciation for the creative art process can be nurtured and explored.
Known for its history as a pre-railroad stagecoach town, the town of Maricopa has balanced its agricultural and Native American identities for the past century. Most recently Maricopa, a community 40 miles south of Phoenix, has been chronicled by the New York Times as a bedroom community boom town gone bust. Central Arizona College has made an investment in the community and is betting on its future. This campus represents a glimmer of hope in an area struck by the national recession.

Phase1
The £3 million project opens up the existing landmark 1930s building to create a new series of formal and informal education and meeting areas, which work as set of interacting horizontal and vertical layered spaces. The intervention of a suspended glazed seminar box within the central learning space, accessed by a slender oak-lined staircase, is the project’s most striking feature. Our team have transformed the previously austere and run-down main spaces in the college to create a welcoming, inclusive and contemporary environment for students, staff and other building users.
This project marks the first phase in the delivery of a strategic masterplan. The success of the project has led to a further commission to carry out the second stage of the masterplan with a £4.9M project.
At Young Harris College, when talking about the institution’s newest residence hall, you could recite the adage, “What’s old is new again,” and on the face of it, you’d be right.
YHC, which less than six years ago began its transition from a two-year to a four-year institution, hired architecture and planning firm Lord Aeck Sargent (LAS) to design the Towers– a 226-bed residence hall that opened in August 2013.
With double occupancy rooms arranged around communal bathrooms and a shared common area, the Towers sounds a lot like a mid-20th century dormitory building. But, there’s a twist.
Collège Lucie Aubrac is the first secondary school in the region to achieve the BBC label (Low Consumption Building). The project is located in the western part of the city of Tourcoing, in a primarily residential neighborhood along with some educational and social amenities. Due to its remarkable location at the edge of the city, along with its tranquil monumentality, the new school adds a new magnitude to the entry to the city. By opening up to two major axes, Industrial Boulevard and the street Fin de la guerre, the new building draws from the best of the natural conditions of the site.
Amstelveen College in the suburbs of Amsterdam in the Netherlands moved into an innovative and practical new building in September 2013.The design is by DMV Architects, who alsodesigned the interior, the fixtures and fittings, the groundsand, importantly for a Dutch college, bicycle parking. In addition, DMV architects supported the Amstelveen municipality in managing the project throughout construction.
This Summa College accommodates health and welfare training courses and, after extensive renovation and extension, covers an area of 16.700 m2. The school entrance was located in the inner square and the school faced away from the Genderpark. In the diederendirrix design, the school and park are interrelated and unimportant side buildings are removed so that the inner square becomes one with the park.
Community and excellence are keywords in Silkeborg’s new Technical College. The college is designed to become a gathering point, promoting vocational excellence while at the same time fostering a strong sense of community across study programmes.
Built to a design by Mecanoo Architects, Fontys Sports College in the Dutch city of Eindhoven has been nominated in the Schools category of the World Architecture Festival awards. The interior design of the project, including a Bolidt flooring system, also features on the shortlist for an INSIDE Award in the Education category. Earlier this year, the building was nominated for the title of South Region BNA Building of the Year.
