EE Jardim Maria Helena III in Sao Paulo, Brazil by +K ARCHITECTS / Keila Costa

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Article source: +K ARCHITECTS / Keila Costa

Jardim Maria Helena III is a Sao Paulo State School, located in the rural area of Barueri, a town in the Greater Sao Paulo metropolitan region. It provides Elementary, Middle and High education to approximately 525 students. The 2,41 acre lot where the 3.391 sqm school is located is a flat terrain surrounded by hills covered by the native Atlantic Forest. Taking these two basic features into consideration – the surrounding nature and the flatness of the lot – the project consists of two parallel two-storey buildings erected longitudinally across the flat terrain, with a large empty central space between them that opens on both sides to the surrounding hilly landscape.

Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland by SANAA

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

Article source: SANAA

Built on the campus of Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), The Rolex Learn-ing Center functions as a laboratory for learning, a library and an international cultural hub for EPFL, open to both students and the public. Spread over one single fluid space of 20,000 sq meters, it provides a seamless network of services, libraries, information gathering, social spaces, spaces to study, restaurants, cafes and beautiful outdoor spaces. It is a highly inno-vative building, with gentle slopes and terraces, undulating around a series of internal „patios‟, with almost invisible supports for its complex curving roof, which required completely new me-thods of construction. The building opened this year to the students and public on the 22nd of February and was inaugurated on May 27th, 2010.

Article source: Holabird & Root

The Plano Classroom Building is a stand-alone satellite campus that contains classrooms, laboratories, student study areas, and support space within two stories. The design team was challenged to create the experience of a traditional multi-building campus within a singular building– a facility that would have its own identity while extending the mission and vision of the College to the surrounding community.

USJ Campus de L’Innovation et du Sport in Beirut, Lebanon by 109 architectes

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Article source: 109 architectes

This new campus takes a contextual approach, integrating physically, culturally, and historically with Beirut’s urban tissue.  Conceptually an urban block with sculpted voids, the building’s hollow spaces define six autonomous blocks and construct multiple viewpoints across Beirut, connecting students to their dynamic setting.  The voids also generate a street-level meeting space, which flows fluidly to the top floor in the form of a massive staircase.
