V&A Dundee in Scotland by KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES and PiM.studio Architects

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Article source: PiM.studio Architects

Envelope

The building envelope is created by methods of twisting, connecting and layering the city grid axis and the adjacent RRS Discovery ship axis, using a ring structure made of reconstituted stone and concrete to compliment the traditional construction materials used in Dundee and reflect the natural cliff structure of the coastline.

The building’s form creates dramatic spaces with an impressive main hall forming a public indoor plaza, and areas that overhang the external public plaza. The external envelope draws people to the waterfront and generates a new migration route along the riverside promenade. The interior space of the main hall is filled with a gentle light emanating from apertures cut through the layered stone to create an open yet intimate public space.

WAP Art Space in Seoul, South Korea by DAVIDE MACULLO ARCHITECTS

Sunday, September 16th, 2018

Article source: DAVIDE MACULLO ARCHITECTS

This work results from a close collaboration between the architect and an enlightened client capable of assimilating and encouraging architectural choices motivated by reasons that generate forms. An extraordinary passion has bound us throughout the years of the project, reaching a synthesis expressed by the completed work.

Architecture connects with the identity of a place and projects it into the future. This new building is the synthesis of the values of Korean culture, a culture that considers carefully its gestures, both physical and social and reveals in them expressions of civility, establishing a balance for man in his natural context.

Building today in the metropolitan city of Seoul gives us the opportunity to restore the built volumes to a human scale, giving it an expression that binds it to the necessities of contemporary living.

Numerous innovative techniques were used to deliver the successful design of the project. The building is divided into two sections; the external geometrical standalone concrete shell enveloping the inner building.

Vol Walker Hall & the Steven L. Anderson Design Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas by MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS

Monday, March 12th, 2018

Article source: MARLON BLACKWELL ARCHITECTS

The Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas is a striking hybrid of a beautifully restored and renovated historical building, Vol Walker Hall (65,000 SF), and a contemporary insertion and addition, the Steven L. Anderson Design Center (37,000 SF). The coupling of old and new invigorates the historical center of the campus and revitalizes the educational environment of Vol Walker Hall, the campus’s original library and home to the School of Architecture since 1968. The expanded facility unites all three departments – architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design – under one roof for the first time, reinforcing the School’s identity and creating a cross-disciplinary, collaborative learning environment.
