Student Residence Diagonal Besòs in Spain by MDB Architects & POLO Architects

Thursday, October 24th, 2019

Article source: MDB Architects & POLO Architects

The Campus Diagonal-Besòs forms a compact, carefully designed urban unity, located at the crossing of Diagonal and Ronda Litoral. The Hall of Residents wants to play its particular role as “social hub” in this Campus; a place with large communal facilities and a pleasant home for a diverse population of students, guest professors and researchers.

The contours of the site are sharply defined along the lining up of several buildings at both sides of the emblematic central wooden deck. This deck symbolizes what this campus wants to be: a harvest of interchange of knowledge and ideas, of education and research.

Using wood in an innovative and expressive way, Bavnehøj Allé Youth Housing seeks new and ambitious standards within affordable youth housing. Bavnehøj Allé consists of 40 one-room apartments on 38-45 m2, with an impressive ceiling height of 3 meters. All apartments are accompanied with either a generous balcony or terrace. The apartments are detailed with honest materials such as natural wood and raw concrete (load bearing construction). The building is a simple composition of two diagonal blocks connected by a centrally located gallery on all floors. Using sustainable New Zealand pinewood for the lamellas it creates a unique patchwork pattern, which contributes to a distinct, vivid and warm expression on the façade. Likewise, it also adds a semi-transparent extension of the apartments that embrace privacy as well as providing an active and living façade.

UGC Vélizy 2 multiplex cinema in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France by Atelier Architecture Lalo

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2019

Article source: Atelier Architecture Lalo

In the redevelopment project for this shopping gallery, Unibail Rodamco West field and UGC decided to create a new multiplex cinema of national stature for UGC Ciné-Cité with 18 theaters and 3,800 places.

The theaters are laid out around suspended decks in the curved volume of an impressive envelop made of glass “scales”, developed by L35, the shopping gallery architects. They like cinemas along a street. They are accessed from above, with the exits on the ground floor. Interiors are subdued, with floating, pleated black ceilings. The project is designed to highlight the use of raw materials and sleek finishes.
