Housing Borneo island in Amsterdam, The Netherlands by Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: Marlies Rohmer Architects & Urbanists

Urban design In the Eastern Harbor Area, next to the KNSM and Java island lie Borneo and Sporenburg islands. West 8 (Adriaan Geuze) has created a very inspiring urban plan. The question for West 8 was how to create a water-city along the kilometers of 19th century harbor cays. West 8 did not solve this problem by attempting to subdue the scale with huge blocks, such as Jo Coenen has done on the KNSM island, nor by trying to reduce the scale by creating cross-canals, such as Sjoerd Soeters, but by repetition of a small scale.

A large Berlin block of flats in Bötzow district, built in 1905, with a representative front building, side wing and rear wing was extensively refurbished in a partially inhabited state.

The originally rich stucco facade of the front building had mostly dropped off and the remaining elements were irredeemably dilapidated.

Central Park Residence in Cluj-Napoca, Romania by Dico si Tiganas architecture and engineering

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Article source: Dico si Tiganas architecture and engineering

When the client demanded three rectangular residential towers on a site with irregular contour, surrounded by a winding stream that derives from the Somes river and by clusters of poplar trees that surround the nearby sports park, we took the responsibility to come up with a different approach: a building that integrates the three separate units in one unitary volume with a layout that undulates on the site so that it makes the most of the natural light and views. It also provides a sheltered space and a private, quiet area, in the resulting concave space. This space is an artificial landscape, a green leisure and relaxation area that is shaped as a green roof for the underground parking.

Dallas City Block in Texas by SLAB architecture, PLLC

Wednesday, August 31st, 2016

Article source: SLAB architecture, PLLC

The World’s populations continue to migrate towards cities. In the case of our country, people are again returning downtown to live and to work. To make our future cities healthy and livable, it is imperative that urban development embrace sustainable design strategies and adopt necessary guidelines and regulations. The city block– the basic DNA of urban planning–provides the appropriate scale for intervening and speculating on the future well-being of our cities.  Sustainability, in its broadest definition, includes a range of issues from environmental technologies, lifestyles, community integration, to education and economics. Our project aims to address these essential issues and illustrate through a design proposition that sustainability can be a catalyst for both change and innovation.

Grove at Grand Bay in Miami, Florida by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group

Wednesday, August 31st, 2016

Article source: BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group

Miami has developed a contemporary vernacular of condominiums that includes brise-soleil-style balconies with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic water views. We have taken these indigenous elements of the new Miami skyline and continue the evolution of their local architectural language. Coconut Grove’s identity is closely tied to its untamed jungle-like vegetation, yet the center sadly lacks this quality. Our design “re-groves” the heart of Coconut Grove, and create a landscape in tune with the surroundings. The two towers of the Grove at Grand Bay respond to the surroundings and to each other, to give optimum views at every level. The towers take off from the ground to capture the full breadth of panoramic views from sailboat bays and the marina to the Miami skyline. The dancing motion of the towers creates a new landmark in the community. A lush abundance of plant-life blankets over the parking and amenity spaces, folding down to create pedestrian and vehicular access to the towers.
