Building off the success of their San Francisco headquarters, VC firm, Battery Ventures, once again turned to John Lum Architecture to head up design. Having outgrown their seventh story penthouse in the middle of the city’s SoMa district, Battery Ventures leased the entire sixth floor, expanding their operations to accommodate an evolving staff and customer base. For their new suite, they sought a progressive workspace that would allow for flexibility, and align with their collaborative corporate culture. To appeal to the firm’s clientele, which ranges from entrepreneurs to blue chips, JLA drew inspiration from midcentury-modern influences, using upbeat color palettes to counterbalance any concern that this is a traditional VC firm.
Situated on a prominent site that captures a beautiful view of the Puget Sound, this 6000 sf building is a highly visible landmark in its growing community.
The building’s rectangular form is punctuated by a two-story glass atrium that serves as the entry lobby and vertical circulation space. The surrounding environment is used to the building’s benefit with natural sunlight and air being utilized to create a comfortable and open office space. Additionally, a rain garden holds water until it is absorbed into the soil, helping to create a lively planted area. These nature-utilizing features not only make for a beautiful space, but also reduce utility costs significantly.
“The Happynest” project was started in 2018. Bean Buro was tasked to design an agile workspace for Jardine Restaurant Group, one of the leading restaurant groups in Asia, in a 22,000sqft (2,040sqm) space across two floors in an office tower in Hong Kong.
The new workplace would deviate from traditional offices to move towards a highly agile, sociable and paperless work environment. The unique features in the client’s brief included a highly productive front of house that can cater for food demo tasting events, food filming, staff training, as well as company ‘town hall’ events.

For its new headquarters in downtown Austin, the festival organizer South by Southwest (SXSW) sought an efficient, cutting-edge workplace with a unique image that would speak to the company’s collaborative culture. The building houses SXSW’s consolidated offices, with remaining office floors occupied by tenants with business and production relationships with the company. An ancillary goal of the project was to preserve a grove of heritage live oaks on the southern edge of the site.
