Xuhui Runway Park in China by Sasaki

Friday, November 30th, 2018

Article source: Sasaki

Xuhui Runway Park is an innovative urban revitalization project that traces the history of the urban development of Shanghai. Formerly a runway for Longhua Airport, the park’s design scheme mimics the motion of a runway, creating diverse linear spaces for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians by organizing the park and the street into one integrated runway system. While all the spaces are linear in shape, diverse spatial experiences are created by applying different materials, scales, topography, and programs. In this way, the park serves as a runway of modern life, providing a space for recreation and respite from the surrounding city.

Hox Haus in Englefield Green, England by 74

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

Article source: 74

Manchester-based architecture and interior design practice 74 has completed a major project to extend and remodel a Grade II-listed, two-storey, Victorian brick building in a semi-rural location in Englefield Green, just outside Egham. The repurposed 453 sq m building – Hox Haus – will serve as the central focus, clubhouse and social amenity for Hox Park student campus, newly-created by developers Moorfield Group for students attending Royal Holloway, University of London.

The new campus is located within a larger, 67-acre mixed-use site, owned by Royalton Group. Its Surrey location, near Runnymede, where Magna Carta was once signed, lent the site its name: Magna Carta Park. The Hox Park campus is one aspect of an overall masterplan for the site that also includes affordable and luxury housing, as well as an Audley Senior Living village.

The project comprises a new centre for children and young people’s writing, in a converted Grade 2 listed almshouse (Live Tales); a vibrant, public ‘pocket park’, which reopens and revitalises the only remaining Grade 2* Georgian courtyard in the city (Live Garden); and new offices where the rental income will fund at least one more play and education project each year for Live Theatre.

Concordia Hub in Wrocław, Poland by MVRDV

MVRDV Designs Renovation of a Listed Heritage Building on an Island in Wrocław

MVRDV has released its proposed design for the Concordia Hub, a renovation and extension of a 19th-century listed building on Słodowa Island in Wrocław, Poland. MVRDV’s design retains the façade of the existing building and adds a contemporary extension to the rear, creating a focal point for the neighbouring park and a destination that will attract more visitors to the Island.

The German Army used Słodowa Island as a base for artillery in 1945, meaning that almost all of the structures on the island were destroyed during the Siege of Breslau in the final months of World War 2. The existing building is notable as the only remaining survivor after a handful of other structures were demolished, with the rest of the island now serving as a popular public park at the heart of the city, and the host of a number of festivals and cultural events.

Alto Development in Wembley Park, London by Flanagan Lawrence

Friday, September 28th, 2018

Article source: Flanagan Lawrence

Set within Wembley Park, London, Flanagan Lawrence’s Alto development is a large-scale residential development for Quintain. Inspired by the adjacent stadium’s leading-edge design, the development forms a key part of one of the UK’s most ambitious regeneration projects. Quintain is transforming what was a derelict brownfield site into a dynamic mixed-use neighbourhood located just 12 minutes from Central London.

Recently named Development of the Year at the 2018 RESI Awards, the Alto development has been designed as part of Quintain’s larger masterplan for the 85 acre site, which also delivers 42 acres of public realm, creating an urban oasis with pockets of green and open space. Seamlessly integrated public realm is a key feature of the scheme, which includes Elvin Gardens, and adjacent pocket parks.
