If considered a closed environment filled with the conditions conduce towards the use of human life. At least in principle of hedonism which consists of:
– A community where neighbors have many luxury cars.
– There is a playing yard for kids.
– The marsh near the house which we can see gaggles floating in the breeze.
– Sports Club for their evening workout.
– A large tree lined landscape not far from the fence house.
– A width road in front of the house but there are very few cars pass by. Yes, it’s very quiet too.
Located at the intersection of the Rochester, MN downtown core and a neighborhood of single-family homes, as well as being adjacent to the Zumbro River and Mayo Memorial Park, this multifamily project with 29 apartments and underground parking needed to resolve the varied conditions and scales of its context.
The urban regeneration and traffic calming project for the new “Spazio Incontro” at Sonvico is part of a wider masterplan for the Dino and Sonvico areas. The underlying concept that informs the general project can be summarized in five points:
Identifying an independent pedestrian route separate from the Cantonal road
Improving and redeveloping the pedestrian route that runs through the entire area
Marking the route with consistent materials so that it is easily legible
Redevelop the public realm and pedestrian routes as tools for mitigating car traffic
Improve, where necessary, the availability of services and urban infrastructure (parking, benches, new public spaces).
The history of Israels Plads (Israel’s Square) reflects the history of Copenhagen’s transformation. This central plaza was once where the city ended in a ring of protective fortifications. As the city gradually extended, the plaza became a vibrant market square – until the 1950’s, when it was turned into a lifeless carpark. The idea with the new Israels Plads is to celebrate the significance and the history of of the site and revitalize it, turning it into a vibrant, diverse plaza for all kinds of people and activities. The surface of the new plaza is elevated above the existing street level – like a new urban carpet. It hovers over the many cars that used to dominate Israels Plads and are now placed in the basement. The cars are literally swept under the new urban carpet. The plaza is programmed as a diverse public space for leisure, culture, activity, and public events. In addition, the new plaza has opened up to the historical landscape next door, H.C. Ørstedparken. A few of the large trees and water elements from the park continue into the plaza, creating a transition between city and nature.
Stones is a 25,450 square foot gambling hall, restaurant, and bar – in essence a boutique casino. The building is an expansion and total renovation of a former Salvation Army warehouse that had been vacant for years, and is the first project of this kind to combine and relocate two existing card room licenses under one roof. Citrus Heights is a small city sixteen miles east of Sacramento – within California’s Central Valley.
From Ghent’s ring road the first sight of the hospital AZ Sint-Lucas one gets is the multi-storey car park. For this reason the design devotes a lot of attention to the atmosphere and appearance of the site. The project zone is split into two parts, with the high capacity car park distributed over two buildings. This creation of two smaller buildings is effective within the spatial context and the granular size of the hospital campus, and creates a visual axis leading to the hospital.
The former post office site in Aalst was a mixture of industrial buildings of the former ‘Filature du Canal’. The “Filatures& Urban Fabric(s): Masterplan stationsomgeving Aalst” masterplan, designed by the Christian Kieckens Architects, started from a site conversion, whilst keeping the main building of the former mill in the Manchester building along the Vaartstraat. The modifications to this building have been kept to a minimum because of organisational and programmatic interpretation, which corresponds with the scale of the building. The facades have been cleaned and re-pointed and equipped with new outside joinery work after its historical model. The building has been renovated on the inside also, in order for it to comply with current regulations, without however interfering with the warehouse’s authenticity.
With its distinctive façade and lighting, the new parking garage for Rigshospitalet, Denmark’s leading hospital, is perceived as a vibrant building sculpture both day and night. Situated on the border between one of Copenhagen’s bigger recreational parks, Fælledparken, and the hospital, 3XN has designed a new parking garage as is an interesting element for patients, staff and passersby.
In an era of privatization, cities are facing a major challenge: investment in the public domain depends increasingly on the private sector. As a result of this reframing of the collective agreement, the role of architecture is often reduced to the visual impact of its shape and surface rather than contributing to a new educational, social and civic dimension. The competition launched by the Ecole Centrale Paris for the design of a new engineering school has become the perfect opportunity to explore ways to answer this demanding challenge.
