Projects do not always occur from freely made decisions, but sometimes as the by-product of external conditions that may have originally emerged as a problem but then evolve toward the substance. Projects emanate from unexpected associations of which, in most cases, we are unaware. Accordingly, it may seem as if projecting is equivalent to relating. It is a matter of compiling and then establishing relations between needs or functions, spaces, shapes, materials and experiences that surface at a given point in the project’s timeline, and we desperately try to capture and materialize.
ENOC Future Station designed by Global Design Principal Ignacio Gomez wins Silver Award under Best Transportation at A&D Awards 2021.
ENOC Future Station is a Petrol Station of the Future located at the Dubai Expo 2020 Site. With sustainability as its primary goal, the project employs principles from bio-mimicry, designing and producing materials that are modelled on biological entities. The service station received the LEED platinum certification world’s first station to receive such honor validating its performance on metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions, etc.
Cepsa is one of Spain’s largest industrial group operating for over 80 years. In recent years it has become a major player in the global energy market. Yet it is their petrol stations that are the crucial touch-point that connects the brand with society.
With the use of materials and form, we wanted to create a project that’s insertion in the context in which it is placed, so light and less impact as possible. Since then, the Company has redefined the service station Industry, creating flagship designs, using top-line materials such as hand cut slate, molded copper, and eclectic themes – all influences driven by the architectural vision of United Oil Co. vice president, Jeff Appel. The privately owned, family-run business recently celebrated 50 years in business, and are known for creating incredibly clean, vibrant, and artistic gas stations throughout Southern California – now operating 124 stations to date.
One of the recent projects designed by Damith Premathilake, a Sri Lankan architect is a petrol station + motel. The architect has rose to the challenges and created an elegant structure which will definitely be a little landmark in this suburban landscape.
