McDonald’s Chicago Flagship in Illinois by Ross Barney Architects

Thursday, December 20th, 2018

Article source: Ross Barney Architects

The new Chicago Flagship celebrates the pure simplicity and enduring authenticity of McDonalds, welcoming both residents and visitors to a playful and informal gathering place in the heart of the city.

The site is a full city block, just steps off Michigan Avenue, occupied since 1983 by the iconic “Rock ‘n Roll” McDonalds that emphasized drive through services. The new design re-balances car-pedestrian traffic creating a city oasis where people can eat, drink and meet. Green space is expanded over 400%, producing a new park-like amenity for a dense area of the city.

A generous solar pergola visually unites the restaurant into a single volume. Beneath this “big roof”, indoor dining areas, contained in a pure glass box, are seamlessly connected to outdoor spaces. The new kitchen reuses the footprint and structure of the previous store and comprises a second concrete clad box.

Ted Ostiense is the result of a well established partnership with the entrepreneur Stefano Aprile. Following the first Ted which is located in Prati neighborhood in Rome, the new space in Ostiense area is more oriented to the nightlife. The interior has a different spacial layout and new custom design but keeps a sense of continuity between the first restaurant.

The main theme is the layering of different materials and constructive systems which all tie in harmoniously. The purpose was to enhance the historicity of the site avoiding a vintage effect.

Bringing modernity to the five-star hotel culture: new architecture comes to life in Rome combining history and creativity with auteur design. This was the goal of Studio Marco Piva when designing The Pantheon Iconic Rome Hotel, which has recently opened to the public following 11 months of works.

The new hotel is part of Unica Collection, which chose to collaborate with the “The Autograph Collection” brand – the Marriott group’s exclusive portfolio of upscale hotels – to put this facility on international circuits, after bringing the building back to its original function. In fact, initially it was the hotel Bologna in via Santa Chiara, before becoming seat of the Senate of the Republic offices.

Meow Restaurant in Guangzhou, China by E Studio

Wednesday, December 12th, 2018

Article source: E Studio

Meow Restaurant is a cat-themed cafe that explores the fun of space. The café is transformed from a red-wall warehouse built in the 1990s. With the location of Butterfield & Swire’s Godowns & Wharf, which is popular among the citizens, the café is not only a place for fifty lovely cats, but also for cat lovers to have parties, enjoy meals and hold pet salon.

With the concept of a sharing space for both people and cats, the challenge of this project is to keep balance between the spaces for the two users.

All the scales and designs of the project are related to cats. In response to the “forest” as the client referred to, by using an abstract design method, E Studio uses blocks and platform devices to connect different spaces instead of illustrating a real forest.

Jeju Narnia in Seogwipo, South Korea by L’eau Design

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

Article source: L’eau Design

Narnia is an imaginary land created by a space of fantasy.

As vivid stories overlap with actual places, the epic scenery of Narnia’s program box makes one remember the space that appears in reality, as a fantasy. Like Jean Baudrillard said, perhaps hyper-reality is being used as a strategy to conceal reality in the real world. Just as Disneyland exists, imitating children, to turn adults’ childishness into fantasy, we dream of unfamiliar routines in an imaginary world created by hyperreality, which feels more real than reality.
