An extension and renovation of a shopping center in Liège, Belgium by JDS Architects

Wednesday, December 29th, 2021

Article source: JDS Architects

CONTEXT:

The project in Belle-ile (Liège) is an extension of an existing shopping center. This shopping center is located between 2 waterways, the river Ourthe and the ‘Canal de l’Ourthe’, which flow into the Meuse a little further. It is a former industrial site that has grown into an urban green space a stone’s throw from the center. The place is popular for shopping, but is also located on the famous RAVeL that runs along the Ourthe. In that regard, it is also an important destination for leisure activities such as cycling, hiking and simply enjoying nature. The Canal de l’Ourthe is now a Natura 2000 site, with beavers resurfacing.

The actual shopping center is a typical peripheral shopping center from the 1990s. It consists of a late post-modern, introverted volume that stands above an enormous parking lot. The footprint of the existing building is approximately 35,000 m² and can be seen as 3 different, unmixed layers: 35,000 m2 of parking on the ground floor, 35,000 m2 of shopping center on level +1 and finally 35,000 m2 of unused roof.

The Playhouse in Tokyo, Japan by Haruki Oku Design + PAN- PROJECTS

Thursday, May 20th, 2021

Article source: Haruki Oku Design + PAN- PROJECTS

The Playhouse is a full renovation project of a three storey building located in the busy fashion district of Aoyama in Tokyo, Japan. The ground and first floor accommodate a number of British fashion brands, and the second floor houses a hall designated to a weddings and events planning company. Our team was challenged with envisioning a new spatial model of the post-COVID store by reconsidering the existing functions of brick and mortar retail.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalization in our societies to a remarkable degree. What was already an ongoing movement is rapidly indicating a future in which the shopping experience will be increasingly moved to the virtual world. If the act of purchasing is preferred online, we questioned what the physical shop could offer once it is liberated from excessive display and storage space.

One Excellence skyscrapers in Shenzhen, China by Farrells

Thursday, January 28th, 2021

Article source: Farrells

Leading urban design and architecture practice Farrells has unveiled its recently completed One Excellence development, in the heart of Shenzhen’s new Qianhai district and China’s Greater Bay Area. The project totals 757,000m2 and sets a global precedent for future mixed use, high-density urbanism – with social and green space at its heart.

Central to the scheme are the multi-level streetscapes which create lively interplays between different functions to generate vibrant retail spaces. Farrells’s design, which interlocks the towers and streetscapes is conceived as an evolution from the imposing shopping malls and isolated towers that have dominated Shenzhen’s urbanism throughout its initial decades of growth. Green spaces, metro links and multi-level circulation routes weave seamlessly into the pedestrian networks that connect the wider Qianhai district.
