Naqu Shuiyue Hutong Quartet in Beijing, China by Tanzo Space Design

Monday, February 24th, 2020

Article source: Tanzo Space Design

In my city, time is running backwards; dead trees are awakening in spring; all the disappeared smells, sounds and lights are recalled. The demolished siheyuan, hutong and temple are restored to their original appearance. The tiled roofs are like sea waves running to the low-rise skyline. Pigeons are whistling in blue sky; children are familiar with the changes of seasons, and residents stand firm in faith.

When it comes to Beijing, most people will immediately have a map in their minds, on which arrays of boxy buildings are closely packed. If viewed from the perspective of clouds, the capillary-liked alleys are the soul of this capital city: that is hutong. Despite the rise of reinforced concrete structures, hutong still exists and records the trivial daily life of common people in the city with its leisurely image, holding the city’s most original memories.

This is a shopping mall containing 24 small local stores, located in suburban roadside area of Fukuoka city. The aim of design was to create an advantage to compete with a large shopping center in the neighborhood.

In response to the owner’s request, the buildings are designed as container stacking, which is a common material for the scenery in this roadside area. The main structure is steel frame, and the exterior walls are made of steel panels which are taken from real containers.

The entire buildings are barrier-free. The wooden deck outside connects to the floor inside flatly, allowing access to the second floor as a slope. All doors are slide doors which are easy to open. In addition, multipurpose toilets, children’s toilets, and a nursing room are installed. These design allows various people to spend time at this mall.

To design the perfect space for them, it was necessary to create something that could create a bond between the stores, wrapping this whole universe together inside a long old brick shed (50m long x 7m wide).

Article source: Sangberg

Havnehusene (The Harbor Houses) is just one of many new building projects in Eastern Harbour in Aalborg paying homage to the area’s historical past.

When developing a historical neighborhood, you simultaneously need to acknowledge the past while you’re creating something new. So rather than embracing a tabula rasa strategy, the objective for the development of Easter Harbor has been to create a new sustainable district while maintaining a reference to the area’s history. Hence industrial history, high silo buildings and contact the water forms the basis for a reinterpretation and development of new urban qualities in the area.

Mega Foodwalk in Thailand by FOS [Foundry of Space]

Tuesday, November 5th, 2019

Article source: FOS [Foundry of Space]

‘Reconnecting Urban Life with Nature Through A Flowing Shopping Experience’.

The sheer size of Megabangna shopping complex is as large as a small town. Its central building is perceived as a downtown, whereas Foodwalk zone on the east wing is portrayed as countryside with more green areas and canals. The new extension of retail zone located on the eastern periphery beyond the existing zone could then be conceptualized as a ‘Valley’, one of the most pleasant natural topography in which its intimate central space is enclosed by continuous frontage of lushly mountains.

The architectural concept of the new extension, ‘The Valley’, therefore derives from the geographic character of its metaphor. To create similar atmosphere to a natural valley, the layout of the new open-air mall is composed around a central courtyard space, in which a sunken plaza with an amphitheatre down below acts as a customers’ main social space for gathering and holding all kinds of events.

Oxígeno Shopping Mall in Heredia, Costa Rica by Jerde

Sunday, August 18th, 2019

Article source: Jerde

There is a well-known saying that echoes throughout Costa Rica: “Pura Vida.” Locals use the term for everything from greeting one another ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’, to saying that ‘everything is great.’ However, the expression is about more than words.  It’s an emotion, it’s an attitude, it’s happiness, and it’s a way of life. And so, to truly be successful, the region’s largest new commercial development needed not just to attract visitors, but it needed to fully capture Pura Vida.

The project – Oxígeno – delivers a new concept of a Human Playground that bridges retail, entertainment, sports, culture, education and gastronomy. More than just a shopping center or lifestyle center, Oxígeno is a dynamic extension of the local community. Part of a multi-phase mixed-use development, this first phase includes 45,000m2 GLA of retail space and more than 15,000m2 of green areas designed around the way residents live, work, and play. Beyond mere commercial offerings, Oxígeno embraces the existing community with ample green areas opened to the public, a jogging trail, and improvements to the public transportation infrastructure including the donation of a train station, constructions of a boulevard connecting two highways, and the widening of front rows to facilitate the operation of public buses. Since its opening in November, Oxígeno has received more than 1.5 million visitors.

SHUM YIP UpperHills LOFT in Shenzhen, China by URBANUS

Tuesday, July 9th, 2019

Article source: URBANUS

This base is a high-end commercial complex with 6 high-rise towers containing offices, hotels and business apartments. Adjacent to the CBD district, it is also located between two central parks in Shenzhen. URBANUS’ design task was to construct a 100,000 m2 loft of apartments and offices on top of a shopping center larger than 60,000 m2.

To release the enormous pressure from the vertical dimension of the high-rise tower, we take advantage of the large area of the LOFTs, creating two artificial mountain volumes, in response to the huge scale of the towers. At the same time, the design connects the project to the natural form of the surrounding Lianhua and Bijia Mountains. This design also encloses a quiet space, by connecting the 3-4 level high-density office LOFT through exquisite sidewalks, creating a small town with rich spatial variation. There are also some public spaces, such as the LOFT Theater and the Trading & Exhibition Center that gradually transform the “big” and “solid” periphery space to the “small” and “dynamic” inner region. The Loft Town has accommodated a shopping mall, business offices and apartments, creating a new model of settlement which integrates residents, offices, shopping malls and cultural spaces.
