Pool House in Quebec, Canada by MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Limited

Monday, April 22nd, 2019

Article source: MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects Limited

This Pool House and spa is built into the side of a mountain at the point where it meets the St. Lawrence River valley floor. Built for a discerning client on his rural property west of Montreal, this seemingly simple structure is intricately crafted. It’s a minimalist project, inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s 1929 Barcelona Pavilion, which established the grammar for this elemental modern architecture.

This is a new construction combined renovation building so connection between new and old is segregated by us according to business function space, the old residential block in front is used for making nail, the new residential block behind is arranged for the living room combined with the cashier, and at the end of the building is space where use for toilet and spa!.

The old residential block is built for a long time and in poor quality, combining with the harsh climate of the Central make the building leaked in the rainy season and hot in the summer! This made us decide to create an outer shell to overcome above two problems!

Article source: FRAN SILVESTRE ARQUITECTOS

The objective of the proposal is to design a building that aspires to have the ability to go through time and not become obsolete, adapting to physical conditions and making the most of them in order to present the situation in an innovative way.

The building is configured as a Kouros that guards the access to the city. In the composition of its façade, the building shows the passage of time and as if it were different strata, the heights that have defined the different types of the city are shown.

La Vela in Thailand by Time Architecture Co., Ltd.

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019

Article source: Time Architecture Co., Ltd.

Project La Vela is a new development with 181 guest rooms,2 restaurants, a spa, a beach club and a large swimming pool.  What is unique about the project is its unusual land site which appears to be two large separated areas joined by a 10-meter wide walkway. The project is located on an 8th century trading route, a fact which inspired the development’s creative layout.

The project architect chose a triangular-shaped configuration where the lines connecting the three vertices represent strength and connectivity and suggest the sightings of stars which travelers used as reference when traveling at night. Such sight delineations are useful to sense the ‘space’ and ‘place’ of vast areas.  Moreover, when multiple triangular shapes are layered over one another, they accentuate a sense of greater connectivity between different areas and expose spaces that were once hidden from view.

The landscaping was created in association with EXIT and makes a tremendous contribution, orienting the building towards Dax, fluidifying its approaches and capitalising on L’Adour and Thiers Square. The entranceways of the various entities of the project were simplified in order to accentuate this new programmatic view.

Villa on the Lake in Lechlade, England by mecanoo architecten

Monday, January 21st, 2019

Article source: mecanoo architecten

The guiding design principle was to create a house that combines transparency with sustainability, forging a strong relationship between the villa and the landscape. The harmony between landscape and interior, architecture and nature, was a key design determinant, particularly regarding sight lines, materials, colours, and lighting. The house is designed from inside out, creating uninterrupted views to the surrounding nature while providing shelter and intimacy. All these aspects work together to ensure the house’s sense of timelessness.

Longroiva’s Hotel & Thermal Spa in Mêda, Portugal by Rebelo de Andrade

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

Article source: Rebelo de Andrade

The history of Longroiva spa is similar to that of most spas in Portugal. The rudimentary medicine that was practised for centuries – consisting of guesswork with shamanistic characteristics – made these thermal water springs one of the most recommended prescriptions.

Longroiva Hotel grew from the need to enhance and obtain a return on the recentlybuilt baths, the result of heavy public investment, which needed a hotel unit to accommodate persons coming to use the spa. It consists of a main building, the restoration of the original late nineteenth century edifice, a terrace of suites on the escarpment and bungalows to the rear. The first sensation we have is of contemplating the typical rows of vines in the Upper Douro, which is the boundary line of Longroiva. The row of rooms set into the escarpment skilfully lightens the weight that construction on a hillside usually imprints on one’s gaze.
