Masterfully Conjurs Small Projects with Big Ideas by Montalba Architects

Thursday, June 6th, 2019

Article source: v2com

The firm’s most recent, small-scale conceptual projects include:

99% AIR, artgenève

Conceived for artgenève 2019–an art fair and exhibition featuring nearly 90 prestigious galleries representing artists at the forefront of contemporary art, modern art and contemporary design–this conceptual venue space transformed air into the primary construction material through the use of inflatable elements for seating and staging. The material waste after 99% AIR was dismantled reduced it to 1% of its total mass.

Dehavilland Studios in London, England by RUSSIAN FOR FISH

Friday, May 3rd, 2019

Article source: RUSSIAN FOR FISH

In Clapton, beside the River Lea, stands a striking art deco building bearing the name ‘Dehavilland’ in vertical red lettering. In the 1940s, this was a ‘shadow factory’, producing aircraft components for use in the war effort, including parts for the Mosquito – the ‘wooden wonder’ that dominated the skies in World War II.

Today, as a superb example of the modernist architecture of the legendary engineer Sir Owen Williams, the 1930s building has become a highly sought-after London living space, its former warehouse interior transformed into a series of open, loft-style studio apartments by the awardwinning developer Hollybrook.

Gwynne St Studio in Melbourne, Australia by Biasol

Friday, May 3rd, 2019

Article source: Biasol

Ideas of culture and connectivity underpinned our design for the Gwynne Street Studio, a dynamic warehouse conversion in Cremorne, an inner-city suburb of Melbourne. The brief called for two new tenancies within a warehouse shell – a new office for Create Company and a new studio for our own practice, with a shared boardroom and breakout space.

The warehouse’s art deco exterior and the neighbourhood’s creative/industrial past provided rich inspiration for our design. Once a hub for manufacturing, Cremorne has seen an influx of young professionals, start-ups and creative industries in recent years, breathing new life into its mix of warehouses, factory shells and Victorian cottages.

Photographer’s Studio in Austin, Texas by Derrington Building Studio

Tuesday, April 16th, 2019

Article source: Derrington Building Studio

The Photographer’s Studio strikes a balance between a voluminous working space, the City of Austin’s zoning regulations, and a shared appreciation for expressive form. This project began with a simple need for a studio in the corner of the photographer’s backyard. Zoning setbacks and tree protection rules quickly eliminated the option to build a separate structure, resulting in a building addition that juxtaposes a typical Austin house with a fresh new form.
