Studio Three in Vancouver, Canada by D’Arcy Jones Architects

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

Article source: D’Arcy Jones Architects

This renovation focused on building a sculptural light-filled liner inside a 106 year old space. With thrift, four layers of old construction and modifications were left untouched. All of the desks are simple glulam beams laid on their sides, all of the fixtures are custom made from raw steel, and the monolithic cabinetry is made from practical and cost-effective plastic laminate. The service spaces feel dark, hefty and crude, to contrast with the glowing, faceted and crisp work spaces.

Atelier Prague in Czech Republic by ING. ARCH. JAN BEK

Tuesday, February 12th, 2019

Article source: ING. ARCH. JAN BEK

We were approached by the client from our previous cooperation. The request was to design a studio where the client could work in a pleasant environment, have visits and stay overnight if needed. The interior was suppose to have not only a representative function, but also a living function with all the facilities that belong to it. We have defined facilities and furniture suppliers at the very first meetings. Our decison was, in case it would possible, for Czech manufactures and designers, which both of us, me and the client are big admirers and fans.

The available space we had was two storey. It was accessible directly from the courtyard of an old Prague building. Since it was not a new building but a restoration, the area has offered us beautiful brick vaults in steel beams, the interestingly designed beam of the upper floor and much more. All these have sure helped us to define the direction of the design we will be following.

Oodi Helsinki Central Library in Finland by ALA Architects

Monday, February 11th, 2019

Article source: ALA Architects

Oodi represents a new era of libraries. The newly completed building in the heart of Helsinki consists almost entirely of public space and offers a wide selection of services. It will become the new central point for the city’s impressive public library network.

The design divides the functions of the library into three distinct levels: an active ground floor, a peaceful upper floor, and an enclosed in-between volume containing the more specific functions. This concept has been developed into an arching form that invites people to utilize the spaces and services underneath, inside and on top of it. The resulting building is an inspiring and highly functional addition to the urban life of Helsinki and the Töölönlahti area.

The Frames in London, England by Squire and Partners

Wednesday, January 30th, 2019

Article source: Squire and Partners

The Frames is a bespoke development tailored to small and creative businesses in Shoreditch. The five-storey building creates 80,000 sq. ft. of flexible workspace for London’s new and growing companies, providing office and studio units to suit a variety of users, along with shared meeting rooms, break-out areas, tea points, cycle storage, shower facilities and a café.

Influenced by the characteristic warehouse vernacular of the surrounding South Shoreditch Conservation Area, the building envelope employs a palette of brick, metal and glass. Following the curved line of Phipp Street with a series of brick columns punctuated by corten-clad window reveals, the design emphasises the vertical proportions of the structure.

Centre for Contemporary Art DOX+ in Prague, Czech Republic by Petr Hájek Architekti

Thursday, January 24th, 2019

Article source: Petr Hájek Architekti

The DOX+ complex of buildings expands the DOX Contemporary Art Centre in Prague, the Czech Republic. The original complex focusing on exhibition areas was expanded by special areas for dance, music, film and a school of architecture.

DOX+ consist of three buildings: administrative with the school of architecture, an experimental music and dance hall and a dance rehearsal room. The buildings are a single unit from the architectural aspect and this principle is symbolically expressed by the unified grey colour and fluid interconnection of all parts into one whole. As a result, the complex can be perceived as a single structured statue.

Thomas P. Murphy Studio Building at University of Miami School of Architecture in Florida by Arquitectonica

Sunday, January 13th, 2019

Article source: Arquitectonica

Extending Arquitectonica’s longtime association with the University of Miami School of Architecture (Bernardo Fort-Brescia, Laurinda Spear and their son Raymond Fort have all served on the school’s faculty), the Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio Building cements the firm’s commitment to the University and its hometown through the design of a one-of-a-kind laboratory and collaborative space for the next generation of architects. The new 20,000-square-foot LEED-certified studio building provides a space that supports and furthers the school’s educational pedagogy. The exposed structure of glass and concrete serves as a teaching tool by illustrating some of the basic tenets of modern architecture, construction and sustainability.

Cultural Production Zone in Guacara, Venezuela by PICO COLECTIVO

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019

Article source: PICO COLECTIVO

Cultural units involve a center of urban creation and experimental economies, based on the transformation of a vandalized construction.

The intervention proposes to confront the need for collective spaces, as a result of the evidence of huge gaps and precarious structures, common in the center of the city. Betting to occupy a building violated during street protests, for its rescue as cultural infrastructure, articulating a series of initiatives driven by groups of artists and local communities.

Duplicate-Duplex in Bangkok, Thailand by TOUCH Architect Co.,Ltd.

Wednesday, December 19th, 2018

Article source: TOUCH Architect Co.,Ltd.

A major pain point of staying in 64 sq.m. of duplex condominium unit, which is used for a home-studio for an animator and an artist, is that there is not enough space for dwelling. Moreover, a double-volume space of living area with a huge glass curtain wall, faces West. High temperature occurs all day long, since it allows direct sunlight to come inside.

In order to solve both mentioned problems, three addition items are proposed which are, GRID PARTITION, EXTENSION DECK, and STEPPING SPACE.

Quanwen Interior Design Office in Hangzhou, China by QUANWEN DESIGN OFFICE

Monday, December 17th, 2018

Article source: QUANWEN DESIGN OFFICE

The new studio of QuanWen Design is located on the north side of Qiantang River, and is adjacent to the  West Lake Mountains.

In the design of the studio, we give a new dimension to space.

With a simple design as the core design concept, we aim to create a simple, clean, pure and relaxed atmosphere of the office environment.

We put aside all the slick decorations for the design of the new office, retaining the most authentic space properties of the building In the new studio, we used minimalist design techniques to explain the aesthetic meaning of the space through eliminating all the extra decorative elements, using  black, white and gray as the main color, using large areas of plain concrete and wood veneer and creating the atmosphere of the office with the most straightforward design language.
