The former governor of Abidjan’s residence was remodelled by architect Paola Bagna as 4* boutique hotel.
The design takes its cue from the Ivory Coast villa’s mid century style and tropical surroundings to charm guests with understated yet luxurious materials and forms.
Nestled between palm trees and tropical plants, this Le Corbusier inspired diamond in the rough had retained it’s appeal despite waterproofing and conservation problems. Over three years, Paola Bagna directed a renovation of the home, transforming it into a boutique hotel of 17 rooms including reception area, restaurant, meeting rooms / event space, bar, wellness area, indoor and outdoor lounges and a swimming pool.
GA DRILLING is a young and dynamically growing family company, that searches to achieve a creative working place for its employees in a new office building. We tried to find out the main philosophy and targets that characterize the company and translate it into an architectural response.
The main idea of the whole project is to create an open and continuous common space with closed working zones attached to it. This open space is crossing the entire building in both ways: horizontally and vertically, interconnecting the interior with the exterior, physically and visually. Light passes into the depth of the tract through wall, floor and roof holes openings, illuminating completely the interior spaces. This continuity creates a sense of transparency, clear halls making communication areas to become common spaces. This spacial continuity, or infinity, becomes a metaphor of the technological possibilities of development and growth of the company.

The ground floor platform that is sheltered by the main volume arrival with space for vehicles, a deposit, a bathroom of service, an technical area. Everything else happens on the upper level, which consists on a large suspended platform, composed of eight rectangular modules of 3,40m x 5,70m. Next to the hill is the pool and the solarium extension made in concrete. A large linear balcony stands in front of the whole room.
The house is located in Lasso in the province of Cotopaxi. The land is part of “Ranchos San José” in the middle of a rural environment. The commission was to design a family weekend home, to rest and to receive visits.
The proposal contemplate several conditions for its implementation and operation. A passive architecture is proposed, thought from the traditional and the artisan work. The use of local materials or of nearby areas, and workers of the zone, allows us to promote the learning and practice of constructive vernacular systems of Cotopaxi.
Winning proposal for the Riga Creative Quarter “Tobacco Factory”:
The Tobacco Factory quarter is to be developed as a creative quarter, bringing together the opportunities of interdisciplinary education, creative entrepreneurship, innovations and cultural activities. The Tobacco Factory is to be adapted for the study process of the Latvian Academy of Culture and for the operation of a creative industries incubator. The territory of the Tobacco Factory will include premises of the Latvian Academy of Culture, a filming pavilion, Latvian Academy of Culture dormitories, the Riga Film Museum and the Latvian creative industries incubator.
The plan, facades and public space organisation clearly separate: (1) the FILM/PHOTOGRAPHY building, joining the Riga Museum of Film and Photography, the National Film School with the filming pavilion and the Cinema, (2) the Latvian Academy of Culture building is connected to the Library building via ground finish in the yard, (3) the Latvian creative industries incubator is connected to the Workshop block and the LAC building, (4) Latvian Academy of Culture dormitories.

The emplacement is given in the corner of a main street that seeks an immediate visual answer, through a dynamic composition and the acknowledgement of a solid material composition.
This project is conceived with the premise of minimizing its impact on the environment, looking for the house to be perceived smaller than it really is. For this, the lower level of the house (which contains the social and service areas) is semi-buried and it is given a rustic and organic treatment, since it is the level that physically relates to nature, while in contrast, the upper level, the one that contains the bedrooms, is considered as a pure block (completely covered in wood) apparently simply resting on the ground.
The project brief was unusual, to say the least: “Ensure me freedom in my advanced years.”
In 2013, an elderly citizen sought out the services of Gary Conrath. Both knew each other well since Indesign had conceived and constructed the co-property building where the woman had been living for a decade. The third storey dwelling was no longer suitable for her. She wanted to live at ground level, in an environment designed to meet her anticipated future needs.
PUNKRAFT is a craft beer bar just around the corner of a historic pedestrian street in Podol, the Kyiv downtown. This basement spot, packed with craft beer fans these days, used to host a cocktail bar.
Our task was to change the schematic layout of the premises, keeping its kitchen and toilet facilities location, to equip cold room for beer kegs storage and completely redesign the interior including the entrance and guest zones.
