Cloud Hotel Renovation Project in Huzhou, China by Studio8

Sunday, October 6th, 2019

Article source: Studio8

Nestled in the mountains of Moganshan, Cloud Hotel sits serenely in a bamboo forest in Deqing County, a popular retreat destination 200km away from Shanghai. The original building had three levels built along the mountain slope and carried features inspired by European castles. STUDIO8 was commissioned to renovate the architecture and interiors and redesign the visual identity.

In the renovation process, STUDIO8 aimed to best utilize the natural slope formed by the landscape, while taking full advantage of the spectacular mountain views. The designers were also faced with a challenge to create a dynamic integration of the spatial experience and the “Cloud” brand image, and to infuse it into all design decisions. “Architecture built in nature functions as the media in between humans and nature; it should blend into the landscape organically, instead of just being in it,” says the studio principal.

The New Campus of Yan’an University in China by THAD

Thursday, September 26th, 2019

Article source: THAD (Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University)

In the old revolutionary district of Yan’an, designing a new campus for a university with a profound history and cultural heritage is a challenging proposition. The design needs to connect the past with the future, and let the history glow with the charm of the new era. We hope to make a difference from the previous campus design, going back to the origins, and exploring more deeply the connotation of this land, which reflect the spirit and regional culture of Yan’an.

ARTJAIL Offices in Toronto, Canada by Studio AC

Monday, September 23rd, 2019

Article source: Studio AC

Artjail is a new space in Toronto for an award-winning New York based creative visual effects boutique. Located within an existing historic industrial building in the west end of Toronto the goal was to insert a number of new spaces within an open plan that would house facilities for High-End VFX work in the advertising, social, film, music video and art world.

The concept revolved programmatically around the creation of three VFX suites which house editing equipment and client presentation capabilities. As these spaces had the most intense requirements technically the design response proposed to elevate these as interior architectural elements.

Article source: INK Architects

The Covered Athletics Complex, designed by INK Architects for the BI Group, locates on a 10 ha land lot between streets of Turan and Bukhar-Zhyrau in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan. The arena is expected to be completed by early 2020. It is going to be the second stadium suitable for the Olympic games in the country after ‘Olga Rypakova’s Athletics Center’ in Ust-Kamenogorsk. The core project objective is to create a sports centre that would integrate into the existing context, contribute to training athletes in an environment close to the Olympics Games, attracting talents to the sport, and promote a healthy lifestyle among the citizens.

The project is sited within the cluster of sports centres such as hockey arena “Barys”, football stadium “Astana Arena”, ice stadium “Alau”, cycle track “Saryarka”, and a wrestling centre completing soon. Being next to existing sports centres helps to reduce the environmental impact by sharing infrastructure and facilities. The venues could also be used as concert halls, events centre, and convention centres in the future, ensuring a long-lasting and sustainable neighbourhood development.

House Desai in Dolphin Coast, South Africa by Metropole Architects

Design Approach

The site purchased by our client for their dream home was a “ green field” site in an established section of Zimbali Coastal Forest Estate. Thick natural coastal forest vegetation covered the site, with a mature Flat Crown tree situated on the front boundary. The site enjoys views of Holy Hill, which is a protected section of natural coastal forest within the estate, to the East.

Many characteristics of Tropical Modern Architecture, including an elemental roof form with large eaves, overhanging upper storey, timber screens and pergolas, flow of spaces including an un-interupted indoor / outdoor flow and lush landscaping, fundamentally influenced the design approach.

Foothill House in Bangkok, Thailand by SS:AR

Thursday, September 5th, 2019

Article source: SS:AR

Chiang Mai is a town in the north of Thailand with strong traditions of arts and handicrafts that have been passed down for generations. Brick was a common construction material for the city’s numerous ancient temples and historic buildings but is often neglected in the current architectural design. In addition to the unique Lanna style of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is also a vibrant contemporary city, with young artistic communities and art galleries.

Located in Chiang Mai, the overall layout of Foothill House takes inspiration from the spatial arrangement of traditional Thai houses where kitchen and services, living room, guest bedrooms, and owner’s bedroom are separated into several units, resulting in a group of buildings connected via an outdoor communal area.

Municipality of Suleymanpasa in Tekirdağ, Turkey by MANÇO ARCHITECTS Inc.

Monday, September 2nd, 2019

Article source: MANÇO ARCHITECTS Inc.

When viewed from the sky it is noticed that the green tissue cuts through building islands and reaches the shore in the east of the center of Tekirdag, a city in Thrace region of Turkey surrounded by agricultural land on the north and Marmara Sea on the south. The competition plot is located right next to this intersection where the urban meets the rural. There the sloping topography is sliced with retaining walls reaching 14m height on the northern corner of the plot, in order to create a bus station on the same level with the avenue. The thought that emerged in response to those walls bordering the green and built areas has been the starting point of the architectural design: “Eliminating the walls of the dam so that the buildings from one side and the greenery from the other mix and flow toward the street level; recreating the destroyed part of the topography with the emerging hybrid tectonic pile.”

The functions of the building program were solved as floors with differing sizes stacked on top of the other according to parameters such as, the level of connection with the street, interrelations among the municipality units and load bearing structure concerns. The building mass was shaped as cascades parallel to the retaining walls, in order to refer to the slope of the topography.
