Bouganvillea House in Valencia, Spain by RUBEN MUEDRA ESTUDIO DE ARQUITECTURA

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

Article source: RUBEN MUEDRA ESTUDIO DE ARQUITECTURA

Located in the upper area of a small municipality in the interior of Valencia, with an irregular network of streets of Arab origin, and especially, with excellent views of the hills and the Valley that forms the Turia River as it passes through the town.

We find an old one-storey house and a beautiful garden of bougainvillea on a plot with a large gap, and nearby homes of a certain age and little interest. An introvert project is proposed, with a prismatic piece closed on three sides, and fully open to the best views. In this way, housing preserves maximum privacy from the street and from neighboring homes, while from the two floors it is fully open.

Ishatvam 9 in Ranchi, India by Sanjay Puri Architects

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

Article source: Sanjay Puri Architects

Situated in Ranchi, a city in East India, Ishatvam 9 is a residential building on a small plot of 1800 sqm.

Most of the plot frontage along the main road is occupied by an existing petrol pump leaving just a driveway for access with a square shaped space beyond which is buildable upon.

Most of this city has existed with low rise development over the last few decades. However, the last few years have witnessed rapid urbanization and in response to this the governing rules which earlier allowed buildings of only 15m height and a buildable area equivalent to the plot size have been changed to allow 50m height as well as a buildable area 3 times the plot size.

Gloriette in Ritten, Italy by NOA* – NETWORK OF ARCHITECTURE

Gloriette Guesthouse: A travel through time

Gloriette Guesthouse by noa * builds on the tradition of summer holidays at Ritten and adds another link to the chain. On the Bozner’s favourite mountain, a house was created, in which city and country merge together.

The former small hotel business Bergfink, which was an anchor point in the village structure and nestled amidst the rural-urban structure with all its bourgeois domiciles, built by wealthy Bolzano merchants around the turn of the century, was demolished and a new jewel was created in its place. As the name suggests, it is a gem in the landscape, inspired by the architectural typology in timelessly, elegant Art Nouveau. With the feeling of an era in which, – not at all pompous – the architecture of the city in a simplified form and without giving up completely on luxury and comfort on the Ritten transposed – generous, classic, simple, but not sober.

Bar Roc in Cape Town, South Africa by OKHA

Monday, November 26th, 2018

Article source: OKHA

When one of the most exclusive hotels in Southern Africa gave OKHA an open brief to redesign its Cellar bar, lead designer Adam Court combined Japanese reductionist minimalism and post-war Italian Baroque, two seemingly opposing visual styles to execute a complete transformation using what he refers to as “Naked Maximalism”.

Ellerman House is a family run hotel comprising several freestanding villas, a wellness spa, extensive art gallery, wine gallery and terraced gardens which surround the central house, an Edwardian Villa dating back to 1906. Each of these spaces has been given a unique design treatment which is why, when it came to the new bar it was important for the hotel to partner with a design studio they had not previously worked with; bringing fresh eyes to continue and explore the dialogue between contemporary and classical.

House TP in Mechelen, Belgium by dmvA architecten

Friday, November 23rd, 2018

Article source: dmvA architecten

House TP is located in the working-class area in Mechelen. A single woman with green fingers bought there a little house next to the church and asked dmvA to reconstruct it.

The client had the desire to do urban farming, which is not evident in the center of the city. Moreover, the plot was fully built and the backside is oriented north, being in the shade of the house most of the time. A green spot behind the house seemed difficult due to the lack of sunlight. dmvA therefore decided to remove the rear of the building, except for one steel beam. The beam inspired them to add some extra beams and place a greenhouse on top. By making the greenhouse literally float, dmvA found a solution to the lack of light that ensured the patio to stay light and airy. The opening up of the parcel generates a beautiful view from the greenhouse or first floor, with the church as urban décor.

Residence in the Galilee, Israel by Golany Architects

Wednesday, November 14th, 2018

Article source: Golany Architects

When Golany Architects approached the design of this residence in the Galilee, they took upon themselves the challenge of maximizing the potential of the lot at the edge of a village, overlooking the open wide landscape, adorned by the Sea of Galilee.

The desire was for the residence to embrace and engage with the ancient landscape. Therefore, it was important to maintain an unobstructed continuity between the lot and its surroundings. To determine the exact level of the house, the architects and clients went to the empty lot, where they climbed a ladder to check for the level at which the Sea of Galilee can first be seen. The level of the house was then carefully determined for a minimal rise above ground level to provide far views, while still avoiding any retaining walls or barriers, despite the mountainous terrain.

Concordia Hub in Wrocław, Poland by MVRDV

MVRDV Designs Renovation of a Listed Heritage Building on an Island in Wrocław

MVRDV has released its proposed design for the Concordia Hub, a renovation and extension of a 19th-century listed building on Słodowa Island in Wrocław, Poland. MVRDV’s design retains the façade of the existing building and adds a contemporary extension to the rear, creating a focal point for the neighbouring park and a destination that will attract more visitors to the Island.

The German Army used Słodowa Island as a base for artillery in 1945, meaning that almost all of the structures on the island were destroyed during the Siege of Breslau in the final months of World War 2. The existing building is notable as the only remaining survivor after a handful of other structures were demolished, with the rest of the island now serving as a popular public park at the heart of the city, and the host of a number of festivals and cultural events.
