The Hochschule Ruhr West – University of Applied Sciences in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany by HPP Architects and ASTOC Architects and Planners

Friday, November 4th, 2016

Article source: HPP Architects

The Hochschule Ruhr West – University of Applied Sciences in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany, in short the HRW, is part of a nationwide development of new universities. With a total of eight buildings and about 62,000 m² of GFA, the university has the dimensions of an autonomous district: four institute buildings, a canteen, a lecture hall and a library as well as a multi-storey car park have been built on the former railway site in the Broich district. The HRW functions not only as a new educational institution, but also as an important component of the urban development concept for the entire university surroundings. For this reason, the various campus buildings reflect the heights and volumes of the surrounding development and the campus itself deliberately opens up towards the quarter and to the adjacent buildings.

The campus of Université de Pau et du Pays de l’Adour (UPPA), bearing the hallmark of its architect André Grésy, is immersed in wooded grounds and has a strong relationship with its environment. In order to comply with the project developed by the university, to coordinate the different activities, and to upgrade – in terms of quantity and quality – the material means and real estate, the building of the Faculté de Droit, Economie et Gestion – Faculty of Law, Economics & Management – and of the Institut d’Administration des Entreprises – Institute of Business Administration – is reorganized, and an extension of the research centre is created.

The world of research is constantly changing. Therefore the project developed by Patrick Mauger is open-ended.

Learning Centre “Innovation”, Lille 1 University in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France by Auer Weber

Wednesday, October 12th, 2016

Article source: Auer Weber

Forward-thinking education requires contemporary concepts, including renovation of university infrastructure, which the French ministry of education has provided extensive funding to expand. An important goal of these reforms is to rethink outdated learning concepts. Technical progress, as well as new methods of communication between teaching institutes (students and teaching bodies) and the public, begin to question the traditional form of scientific libraries. The new Learning Centre “Innovation” is part of a series of similar institutes tasked with stepping up to the new challenges and preparing for the future.

Jacobs Hall – UC Berkeley in California by Banker Wire

Wednesday, October 5th, 2016

Article source: Banker Wire

It’s only fitting that a university building with multiple practices under one roof is employing the use of versatile woven wire mesh, manufactured by Banker Wire.

Banker’s mesh provides strong infill material that also meets the architect’s design intent for exterior stair and pedestrian bridge railings at the new Jacobs Hall on the University of California, Berkeley campus. The three-story, 24,000-square-foot building houses design studios, equipment labs, classrooms, and community space.

University of Waterloo School of Architecture in Ontario, Canada by LGA Architectural Partners

Wednesday, September 28th, 2016

Article source: LGA Architectural Partners

The University of Waterloo School of Architecture at Riverside is a conversion of a 100-year-old silk mill located in Cambridge. The existing building is 85,000sq/ft over three storeys and is a steel and wood structure with mill deck flooring. The building was funded by donations from all levels of government as well as the local business community. A unique aspect of the project was the modest budget coupled with an extremely aggressive timeframe: $100/sf and one year to design and build, ready for occupancy. We developed a fast-track schedule to allow for the design and building activities to happen simultaneously. The project was delivered on time and on budget in September 2004.

Life Science Centre of Vilnius University in Lithuania by Architektūros linija

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Article source: Architektūros linija

The key idea of the Life Science Centre architecture are the science and teaching complex modules forming the public space layout and comprising the integral whole like different cells of the matter. Cube-shaped volumes in open spaces of Saulėtekis, reiterating the natural context and building a humanist, traditional urban structure characteristic of the city of Vilnius, resemble a feature of the historical Vilnius University ensemble – a cosy inner courtyard. The volumes comprising the square perimeter and the entrance to the building are moved out over the glass vestibule and the merging space unites the areas of the main lobby, the courtyard and the passage, seamlessly linking them with the environment.
