A Hospital Model Designed Around The Patient

The project for the new University of Navarre Clinic in Madrid follows a high specialization, teaching and research hospital model, in which the patient is at the centre of all care.

A compact building was deigned where distances are minimised, the S/V ratio and the construction economy are improved while making the most of natural light. Vertical communications and developments are promoted as a quick and easy approach to the patient.

The project intends to create an environment for the patient that is close to the comfort conditions found at home, which would effectively favour the patient’s recovery.

University Center Maria Antonia in São Paulo, Brazil by Una Arquitetos

Thursday, December 6th, 2018

Article source: Una Arquitetos

Maria Antonia Street is a historical reference for the University of São Paulo and a mark in the cultural and political life of the city. As the address of the Mackenzie College since the end of the 19th century, the Maria Antonia Street became a catalyser of academic and social discussions after the establishment of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters at the Rui Barbosa Building, on 1949.

After a violent invasion of the building, by a group of right wing students, escorted by the police in 1968, the Faculty of Philosophy was transferred to the campus of the University (Cidade Universitária).

Article source: Design Engine

The AUB Design Workshops & Studios Conversions consist of the transformation of two former on-campus halls of residence, originally constructed in 2001, into modern studio and teaching space for Arts University Bournemouth’s internationally renowned higher education courses.

The success of the institution, and the wider changing demands of higher education, instigated a reappraisal of the Halls’ use as part of Design Engine’s 2009 vision for the future masterplan for the University.

Putting student activities on display to encourage diverse use of space

LC8 (Learning Commons Hachioji) is an on-campus “third place” for students at Kogakuin University. Located on the first through fourth floors of the new Building 2 at the Hachioji Campus, the space was conceived in the campus general plan as a new kind of learning site for gathering and engaging in discussion outside of the classroom. This “learning commons” combines the functions of library, learning support center, and student hall typically found at any university, also goes beyond these conventional functions to provide flexible shared space that gives rise to a diversity of student activities.

Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) by LOOK Architects Pte Ltd

Monday, September 17th, 2018

Singapore University of Technology and Design – Student Housing and Sports Complex.

LOOK Architects, in collaboration with Surbana International Consultants, has put forth the winning design proposal for Singapore University of Technology and Design’s (SUTD) new student housing and sports facilities, envisioning a spatial framework that embraces creative liberty and possibilities. Drawing a parallel to traditional Chinese painting (empty space being regarded as a spatial element sharing equal if not greater importance as solid figuration), voids are seen as spaces for imagination to thrive. This dimension of ‘energised voids’ in the design approach is manifested as a peek-a-boo trail of collaborative spaces along the common corridors of hostel blocks – an orchestration of multi-use spaces open for leisurely exchanges. On a macro scale, these perforations in the 12-storey hostel blocks are strategically located to allow for increased air movement through the building mass, a passive environmental control measure that promotes natural ventilation through housing units.

JGMA’s design strategy for the Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing Center utilizes building transparency to showcase machines, equipment, and products integral to the learning objectives of the colleges as well as provide a visual connection to the surrounding West Lawn community. The seamless fluidity to the building’s form was inspired by the constant and linear flow of the manufacturing process. The building spans the main thoroughfare of 76th Street with a strong industrial bridge that links the south and north campus of Richard J. Daley College.

CMRU Admin and Academic Block in Bangalore, India by M9 Design Studio

Sunday, September 9th, 2018

Article source: M9 Design Studio

We were asked to design the admin and academic block for an upcoming university campus in suburbs of Bangalore catering to two important requirements along with the programatic brief which were to complete the project in minimum possible time-line and to make the structure adaptable for future additions and alterations. Hence, the idea of prefabricated steel structure was proposed where all major work was done in workshop and then these prefab components were assembled at site. This helped us achieve accuracy in less time without compromising the quality.
