10 LaSalle in Hong Kong, China by LWK + PARTNERS

Monday, February 22nd, 2021

Article source: LWK + PARTNERS

10 LaSalle rests on a corner site in Hong Kong’s covetable low-density neighbourhood of Ho Man Tin, which is traditionally best known for its concentration of top schools and well-established academic culture.

The slender 19-storey single block is situated in this tranquil pocket of the city amid a network of tree-lined streets which are not a common sight in highly dense Hong Kong. “At the site planning stage,” said LWK + PARTNERS Director HC Chan, “We took full advantage of such a pleasant environment with a building orientation that maximises the angle of view towards the famous Lion Rock and nearby cityscape, further facilitated by large glass windows letting in generous sunlight. The tower is also set back from the street to mitigate the blocking of views by nearby buildings, especially for lower units, while at the same time reducing any street canyon effects.”

One Excellence skyscrapers in Shenzhen, China by Farrells

Thursday, January 28th, 2021

Article source: Farrells

Leading urban design and architecture practice Farrells has unveiled its recently completed One Excellence development, in the heart of Shenzhen’s new Qianhai district and China’s Greater Bay Area. The project totals 757,000m2 and sets a global precedent for future mixed use, high-density urbanism – with social and green space at its heart.

Central to the scheme are the multi-level streetscapes which create lively interplays between different functions to generate vibrant retail spaces. Farrells’s design, which interlocks the towers and streetscapes is conceived as an evolution from the imposing shopping malls and isolated towers that have dominated Shenzhen’s urbanism throughout its initial decades of growth. Green spaces, metro links and multi-level circulation routes weave seamlessly into the pedestrian networks that connect the wider Qianhai district.

Urban Dunes in Abu Dhabi by Barberio Colella Architetti

Wednesday, November 25th, 2020

Article source: Barberio Colella Architetti

Urban Dunes is a project which envisions a futurable solution to reduce the heat island effect for an extreme climate such as Abu Dhabi’s, where the harsh conditions felt across significant months of the year reduce the feasibility of normal external activities. The Italian design firm Barberio Colella Architetti with architect Angelo Figliola have elaborated a design proposal that started from the deep awareness of the climatic context of Abu Dhabi’s and Emirates’ traditional architecture, such as elegant vaulted spaces, vernacular shading devices, and cold-water basins. The main architectural idea behind the project is to ideally lift up a thick layer of sand to create an urban “oasis”, which mixes passive and low-tech active systems to maximize the outdoor thermal comfort calculated with the UTCI index. The vault is composed of several stereotomic blocks made of 3D printed sandstone, using the local sand as a primary material. The sand is made solid by using the binder jetting technology, which is capable of fabricating big blocks with a high level of precision. The use of a 3D printed vault with a thickness of 55 cm, permits to avoid the overheating of the urban space thanks to the high thermal mass of the shell, acting as a main passive strategy.
