This project on the Mornington foreshore creates two double storey houses on a lot facing Mills Beach and bordering the mouth of Tanti Creek with full utilisation of Habitech’s panel system.
Situated near Melbourne in the Victorian town of Mornington, the brief to design two beach houses was primarily driven by the opportunity to create living spaces with extensive northern views over Port Phillip Bay, and both the opportunities and limitations of its creek side location. One house has been designed for our clients to live in, with the second house being offered for sale upon completion.
Acute House is the transformation of a ‘renovator’s nightmare’ into a compact 21st century family home. The severe limitations of a tiny, very triangular site and the demanding heritage context have resulted in a pointy new wedge of house that is designed to exploit its problems.
The original, and extremely decrepit, Victorian weatherboard cottage had become impossible to inhabit but was well loved by the neighbourhood as well as its new owners.
Quarry House is a renovation and addition to an existing Victorian terrace in Brunswick East. The design takes its cues from the history of the local area, with particular reference to the brick and bluestone quarrying industries upon which Brunswick was founded. The built form is conceived of as two stacked boxes; the ground floor brick box and the upper storey bluestone box. The existing house was constructed almost entirely of brickwork and the ground floor addition remains faithful to this material. The upper floor recalls the local bluestone industry through a figurative representation of naturally occurring bluestone formations. These tessellated patterns are formed when basaltic lava flows cool to create bluestone, cracking and shearing in geometric arrangements. The upper storey is clad in folded zinc panels which recall columnar basalt, eroded at the rear facade to provide an arched, cave-like outline to the new master bedroom window.
Located on a corner site on the hills overlooking Tamarama Beach the design allows the house to be a sculpture on the site. With stone forming the base a sculptured curved fa§ade creates the lighter upper levels. The building is beautifully modulated by the use of timber batten extensions forming bay windows against the curvaceous white render masonry which all sit wonderfully with the Will Dangar designed gardens.
Our clients desired a building that would endure time, evoke a sense of permanence and a sense of already existing on the site. Brick was the natural choice that immediately met this requirement.
The site sits on the edge of the Swan River with views to the city of Perth. The design creates an experiential connection to the meandering river, a fluid and dynamic body of water that has carved out mass forming a direct engagement with the occupant.
Equivalent to the brownstones of New York, this interwar duplex is a humane scale solution to housing in the Sydney city fringes.
Shoulder to shoulder with other apartment buildings, the original 1920s two-storey flats were transformed into a four storey block with a basement carpark and cellar, a ground floor garden apartment and a two-storey penthouse.
Oak Grove is a development driven venture. Between a detailed client brief laden with ideas about visual style, and the site located in the eclectic suburban context of East Malvern, the architecture negotiates a meaningful contemporary response within highly saturated physical and conceptual parameters.
The Carlisle Street extension is a foray into a new-Australian vernacular. Familiar materials and form are used with a higher-consideration to context and passive design, exploring a vernacular for the modern-day. The extension is restrained and simple; a volume of space that is light-filled and expansive yet private.
The Bathersby Boarding Village is akin to a castle in the centre of a city (the school). It is a place where every boy can feel like “the King of the Castle”.
Fort-like boarding houses have a long tradition in English schools. They offer appropriate frameworks for safety, security and community building.
