The Center of Mathematics at the University of Karlsruhe was built in 1964 and needed to be refurbished both architecturally and energetically. Located close to the historic center and due to its location on the edge of the university campus the building works as “showcase” of the university to the city. The rectangular, five-storey building encloses an elevated mezzanine patio, open to the east and west on ground floor.
New building for the “Glauburgstraße” stop on the U5 line, Frankfurt on the Main 2016
The heavily used local train service between Frankfurt city center and the district of Preungesheim is being upgraded to provide barrier-free access. Just/Burgeff Architect’s design for the “Glauburgstrasse” stop on the U5 line emerged from a design-and-build competition organized by VGF, Frankfurt’s public transport company. Informed by the particular urban situation of this stop, an idea developed that goes beyond simply providing a platform and shelter for the waiting passengers.
Directly in the middle of Berlin the Residential District “The Garden” with owner-occupied as well as rented flats was completed in August 2016. Right across from the new headquarter of the German Secret Service a complex of buildings with 5 to 7 above-ground levels was built. 161 exquisite rented flats, 115 owner-occupied flats, 7 commercial units and 88 underground parking spaces find a place there now.

What could a natural history museum of the 21st century look like? The special exhibition of the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) in the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, provides some answers. In the context of the Evolutioneum workshop, scholarship students of the aac have produced designs in two parts, which are on display at the Zoological Museum, Hamburg, until 27 August. The Evolutioneum is a museum concept which builds a bridge between science and the public, and which also provides space for natural science collections and exhibitions.

For the Techtextil ‘Living in Space’ exhibition UNStudio and MDT-tex have created Prototype II, a modular shelter which envisions how we might one day live on the moon or on Mars. The design is inspired by foldable structures and the need for lightweight and compact transport into space. In the Techtextil installation the self-supporting pavilion serves as a space in which guests can experience a trip to Mars in virtual reality – as represented by co-exhibitors the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR).
German steakhouse chain Maredo was founded in 1978. With around 50 restaurants nationwide, it is Germany’s market-leader in the steakhouse sector. To remain competitive and cash in on the prevailing steak and burger hype, Maredo opted for a radical interior makeover and profile enhancement.
With its dual concept between a hostel and a hotel the Superbude I in Hamburg attracts a broad-range target group. Its location in the centre of the hip district „Schanze“ enables a surprisingly unconventional design.
Our task:
Our task was to further develop and design the successful concept „Superbude“. This included designing the „Buden“, a colloquial word used for the rooms in this hotel, as well as the public areas such as the lobby, bar and shop etc. The hotel / hostel is in a listed building, once a Deutsche Post switching centre at the turn of the century. For this reason the staircases were restored true to the original.
In Berlin, on the site of “Urbane Mitte” between the eastern and western parts of Gleisdreieck Park, GRAFT designed and planned a mobile brewery and beer garden. The building for BRLO BRWHOUSE combines a restaurant and bar, beer garden and events space with a craft brewery and administration spaces and is remarkable for its modular container architecture.

The 28th of April is the big day – the new concert hall in the Kulturpalast in Dresden will be ceremonially opened with a festive program. On the day after, the rooms of the other main functions of the Kulturpalast, i.e. the new central library and the “Herkuleskeule” cabaret venue, will be inaugurated. The refurbishment of the existing part of the building, which is listed as a historic monument, and the new building of the concert hall with about 1,800 seats, which will be used by the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra amongst others, have been completed to a design by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) who won the competition for the project in 2009.
