When OTTOTTO studio removed the plaster from the walls of this house, two imposing stone walls were revealed. Their beauty made it inevitable to keep them in sight, adding just a new layer, in metallic mesh, to blend the 20th century with the new structure and skylight.
This is the rehabilitation and expansion of a building in the historic center of Leiria for twofamily housing. The total recovery of the existing façade is based on a very common language of the city of Leiria, with the openings in bordeaux and white colors, surrounded by stonework. The vertical extension that marks the new phase in construction, is surrounded by a white wooden slat. The intersection of both architectural moments dictates the uniqueness of this project.
Casa Tojal is shy and bucolic, from a steep terrain surrounded by olive trees. In a torn gesture, it is born as an integral part of its landscape and it leans over the valley towards the garden that surrounds it.
The challenges and requirements that guided the project went mainly through the question of solar orientation, the framing of the best view (North / West) and a concern with the couple’s daily routine in a logic of different accesses, absence of obstacles and flow of circulation.
The Project arises in a small land with a slightly slope, in the vicinity of Ansião Village.
The departure point of the building is the permanent contact with nature. The construction is organized through a main axle which not only intend to solve all the workable programme, but also operate as a border element of the social and the private areas. This onestory house is elevated from the floor maintaining some connection points which intend to achieve a symbiotic relationship.

The concept of space was designed as a metaphor, it should be an iconic image that people would easily recognize. The idea of combining the use of an iconic image with colors and shapes that integrate with Nature has always been present and thus the idea of the olive branch arose.
Architecture is seeing birth and making life projects happen. And if so, this is undoubtedly an excellent example. An open space, ready to receive such important areas as physical rehabilitation, women’s health, baby’s health, family health, well-being and nutrition. These are some of the areas that combined with a simple and committed working spirit, direct and without prejudice make the image of this clinic.
The key concepts for the development of this clinic begin with neutrality and minimalism (technical floors, white walls and clean lines), combined with the warmth of the reception (woods and fabrics) and the workforce (ropes), without forgetting that we are an integral part of everything which is natural (stone and plants).
The single-family housing is located in Galegos de Santa Maria, Barcelos, a plot terrain with circa 4000 sqm. The building was implemented near of the corner of 1º Dezembro Street and Trás da Fonte Street, allowing the construction of another house on the remaining ground to the North.
The program is distributed over four independent volumes that are interconnected by a central patio. All over the patio’s perimeter is created a corridor allowing the access and the relation between the different spaces of the house. The corridor and the patio are only separated by window frame and two walls built with granite stone of the existing ruin.
This project intends to refurbish a single-family house, severely affected by pathologies resulting from defective construction options.
In addition of trying to correct the existing pathologies, we also intend to rectify the dysfunctions of spatial organization. Besides, the ambition of the project is to rehabilitate the dwelling to give it new habitability conditions, and to ensure that it becomes more versatile and with better construction details.
The ground where it is positioned admits two distinct zones, an urban one confronted with the main street, and where the house is implanted, and the remaining rural area of forest use, where it is foreseen an implantation of a space of leisure with a padel field and garden areas.
