For an architect, the task of giving a manor house a new purpose and function is of course a fascinating, yet also complex, challenge. For every business, the new build of a company headquarter is a forward striving action, and thus, also the new ÖWG/ÖWGes office building, became an architectonic contribution to the urban room of Graz. In essence, it’s about expressing presence and future-orientated ambition both externally and among the employed staff, the building should communicate that new approaches are being made.

The history of Fohnsdorf as a coal mining town serves as the inspirational starting point for the design of the thermal bath. The building is situated as a monolithic block seemingly growing out of the existing topography by analogy with the characteristical form of a coal seam.
In comparison to the local surroundings, the distinctive architecture of the hall marks the attempt to provide a new highlight in a highly heterogeneous and, in terms of scale, non-homogeneous structure of a rural settlement. The hall has been deliberately designed as a venue for everyone; it stands apart from its neighbouring buildings and almost looks like a UFO that has just landed.
