Evolution Design re-designs a school entrance hall into an inspiring collaboration space in Zürich, Switzerland

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Article source: Evolution Design

The Inter-Community School Zurich is a private international day school, which offers a comprehensive educational programme in English for children from ages of 3 to 18.

The new design forms a fresh and individual space that reflects ICS’s culture and values, and gives their staff and students a strong sense of belonging.

During the planning stage, the students along with the staff were greatly involved in the decision-making process by expressing their needs and favoured use of the space as well as their preferences in furniture, material and colour choices.

Oberriet cemetery in Switzerland by Tom Munz GmbH

Friday, September 22nd, 2017

Article source: Tom Munz GmbH, St.Gallen

Initial situation

The cemetery building no longer satisfied the requirements for interfaith use. The perimeter of the new hall for public viewings and funeral services was limited by existing areas for graves and urns, and demanded a sacral interpretation together with a suitable atmosphere.

Europaallee ‘Site D’ in Zürich, Switzerland by WIEL ARETS ARCHITECTS

Sunday, August 27th, 2017

Article source: WIEL ARETS ARCHITECTS

This new building is an integral component of ‘Europaallee’, a currently emerging district adjacent to Zürich’s central train station. A plinth of retail programming anchors the project to its site, while its upper volumes consist of flexible office spaces that, due to their shallow depth and efficient façade grid, can be occupied by several individual companies or a larger singular tenant. These dual programs posed the challenge of creating two unique lighting and spatial requirements within this prominently sited building. The main entry has been positioned along the parallel ‘Europaaallee’, and opens onto the ground floor’s main retail and circulation spaces. From the ground floor, a central staircase complemented by two ramping escalators traverses and connects these areas. Foreseeing a possible conversion into future residential units, the building’s flexible structure was designed to allow for such a repurpose of its program. The resulting silhouette, and the alignment of its highest points with the trackside façades of the two adjacent plots, will ensure a powerful and unified building amid the area’s planned structures, further defining the distinguished context of the surrounding ‘Europaallee’.

House with a Tree in Basel, Switzerland by Sauter von Moos

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: Sauter von Moos

Maintaining the tenderness and charm of the existing house from the 1930’s, our intention was to

(1) gently renovate / restore the existing structure

(2) enlarge the building through a series of micro-scale additions that follow the logic of the existing spatial division into small rooms

(3) entangle the existing, the tree and the new in a joyful composition

(4) improve the house’s energy-balance by modernizing all technical installations using exclusively renewable energies

(5) carefully relate the house to its surroundings, both natural and urban.

Apartment Building On The Zurichberg in Zurich Witikon, Switzerland by Jan Henrik Hansen

Friday, August 18th, 2017

Article source: Jan Henrik Hansen

The site possesses an impressive view over Zurich, the lake and the mountains due to its location on the Zürichberg. The building geometry was developed as a result of maximization of space within the legal framework. In order to let the surfaces of the volume respond to light and environment through their inclination angle, a sculptural relief in anodized aluminum was developed for roof and facade, which gives the building a natural appearance, despite its materiality.

Freiluft Barn Conversion in Rüegsauschachen, Switzerland by Freiluft

Friday, July 21st, 2017

Article source: Freiluft

How on earth does one come up with the idea of pouring a huge amount of concrete into an Emmental farmhouse? Certainly, one could find several practical reasons (statics, thermal storage mass or the like…). For us, the house needed something rough and immediate, something that could build up its own world in the former barn and hayloft. A concrete object now cuts through all three floors and supports the old roof. In addition to its structural qualities, it holds all the bathrooms and kitchen accommodations, as well as cabinets and storage space. Large windows open up the view into the impressive attic.

Champs-Meunier Sud in Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland by Richter Dahl Rocha & Associés architectes SA

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2017

Article source: Richter Dahl Rocha & Associés architectes SA

The southern part of the newly built Champs-Meunier compound holds 3 buildings. These are scattered following a terrace scheme and sit in a rural context whilst still standing on the border of the city center. The 47 flats are each composed of 3 to 5 rooms and are transversal. The flats are distributed around a central core, allowing the scheme to be simple and efficient.  Moreover, large balconies outspread the living areas, thus permitting the interior / exterior boundary to vanish.
