A Mobile School for Burmese Refugees in Thailand by in situ studio

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Article source: in situ studio

One-hundred and forty-four frames, the structure of a new school, arrive on site a bit after nine in the morning on three flatbed trucks. The three-hour trek to Kwe Ka Bung has been challenging. Just one week ago these people learned the landowner of their former settlement site would be pushing them out to develop the land. Many families have left their homes behind, along with much of the infrastructure for producing food and dealing with waste. Thankfully, demounting the school that has now arrived required only one afternoon and twelve workers.

Sunone in Bangkok, Thailand by Department of ARCHITECTURE Co., Ltd.

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Article source: Department of ARCHITECTURE Co., Ltd.

Located among a low-rise residential neighborhood, a new location for a software developer–SUNONE presents designers with a great challenge dealing with quality of living for existing residence and working condition for the new comer. In order to preserve serenity of an area, respect privacy for each residence and simultaneously create pleasing working environment for staffs, pattern of horizontal screening was introduced to the project. Not only does it create visual barrier between inside and outside; allowing no direct sight from inside to surrounding residence, but does it serve as light filter generating array of light quality for interior space.

Wetropolis images in Bangkok, Thailand by S+PBA

A Post-Diluvian Future

While most of the world follows the standard from dust to dust, ashes to ashes cycle, Bangkok prefers something wetter: from water to water. Almost 300 years after rising from the marshy banks of the Chao Phraya, it appears Bangkok will return to its watery origins. A recent UN study estimates that much of the metropolitan area will need to be abandoned by the middle of the century.

This project was commissioned by Sansiri, an urban residential developer. Providing the image of new life style is the role of the sale office. The building was first designed with glass skin exposed to the surrounding, appearing solid, conventional and missing sense of ‘home’. Seeing also that Bangkok urban is suffocating with concrete surface, Shma the landscape architect, proposed this green living façade so to give building uniqueness and to draw public attention.
