Kilic Ali Pasa Hamam in Istanbul, Turkey by Cafer Bozkurt Architecture

Friday, January 30th, 2015

Article source: Cafer Bozkurt Architecture

The Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam was constructed in 1580 by Master Architect Sinan, on behalf of Ottoman Admiral Kılıç Ali Paşa as part of a larger ‘külliye’ complex, in the Tophane district of Istanbul. As the physical manifestation of a unique period in the historical harbor of the Ottoman imperial city, the Kılıç Ali Paşa hamam has become not only part of public space again in the Tophane area, but also part of an overall revitalization of a previously derelict area in the city. 430 years of layered materials and debris, literally ‘embalming’ the surfaces and ‘burying’ the structure, had to be removed in order to identify and restitute the original Sinan building, thus relinking this 1st degree historical monument back to its origins.

Göcek Portville in Fethiye, Turkey by Cemal Mutlu Architects

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

Article source: Cemal Mutlu Architects

The project was prepared in 1999 and constructed in 2007. At the time of the design, regional plan regulations on building local style were strict and most of the architectural elements ere dictated. Working within these limitations, we had to take the Muğla residential style as reference, that was never applied within the Göcek area. The site plan was partially developed with HOK. Considering the land’s flat surface, high water table and existence of the marina in a short distance, formation of channels seemed to be evident during design process. The water channels, serves as a means a means of transport to the open sea and allows the cool breeze into the development while giving different vistas to the shore and the neighboring forest.

The stairs arranged for seeing site of expo is placed like mountain path. These stairs definitely aren’t trying to hide – they’re the most interesting element in the tower. Reminiscent of a climbing mountain, the stairs of circulation are balanced by the long cable structure.Circulation elements can act as urban focal points outside of where people can come walk and seeing. The symbolic observation tower is conceived as a round arch of steel structure with an open-air stairs at its body. The open-air stairs contains flexible walking path and terrace which are accessed via bazaar entrance.Walking downwards from the top through a continuous stair promenade, the visitors of the observation tower experience all of the building’s in a constant motion, while enjoying dynamic 360 degree views of the city of Antalya and the Expo landscape.

The space is designed as an R & D studio within headquarter of a textile company. The design concept was built on the physical relations among the users (R & D personnel), products, accessories, and the materials.

It was observed that actions of sitting, walking, working, evaluating the products by comparisons, performed in ordinary levels and locations, are limiting the function of  R & D.
