Central Park District 08, Dubai International Finance Centre in UAE by Hopkins Architects

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Article source: Hopkins Architects

Central Park District 08 is part of the Dubai International Finance Centre masterplan.

The site is located near to the extreme end of the development boundary and sits alongside one end of the axis that runs across the site, linking the Gate Building, the Emirates Towers and the World Trade Centre on the other end.  This location therefore forms a significant counterbalance to the Emirates Towers and as such lends itself to being a building with strong presence.

Sheik Zayed Library, Dubai Seven in UAE by Cheungvogl

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Metaphorically, the structural design is rooted deeply into the ancient culture of Dubai. Respecting traditional disciplines and incorporating the significance of organic forms, symbols and patterns, the design seeks to redefine traditions as well as continues to test new boundaries for the future. As we critically question the ‘whys’ and ‘how’s’, finding the reasons for everything, there is no room for imitations. This symbol must be a unique phenomenon – a flower growing out of the desert ground. Following the rational thinking of looking deeper into nature and plant structure such as bamboo, we understand that the structure is made up of multiple strands of fibre, tightly knitted together.

Aldar Central Market in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by Foster + Partners

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

The historic Abu Dhabi Central Market is one of the oldest sites in the city. Inspired by the traditional architecture of the Gulf this scheme aims to reinvent the market place as a contemporary mixed-use complex and give the city a new civic heart. By offering an alternative to the globalised ‘one-size-fits-all’ shopping mall it offers a distinctive modern interpretation of the regional vernacular. As a shopping experience it combines luxury goods shops with food markets and craft-based trades. Like the traditional souk, these different experiences are brought together in an interior architecture of dappled sunlight, vibrant colours and running water, with a changing rhythm of squares, courtyards and alley ways.

Tall Emblem Structure in Za’abeel Park, Dubai, UAE by Marco Acerbis Architetto

XI ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award

The location of this new tower is a beautiful green area surrounding a lake and very close to the city. The proximity to the airport will give the new building an opportunity to be seen from the sky and not only from the earth. The landscape of the city area is mainly flat and with very strong sunlight. Climate conditions are typical of this latitude and are certainly extreme in some months of the year. A lot of time was spent thinking about what the best gesture for such a scenario would be. So that in one building I could respond to all area conditions and social expectations required by a new iconic tower. A particular thought was given to the experience that children shall obtain from a contemporary building.
