Al Ain Stadium in United Arab Emirates by MZ Architects

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Article source: MZ Architects

Set into the desert landscape, the Al Ain football stadium celebrates the game it hosts as much as it celebrates the site in which it lays. Recognising the powerful language of its surroundings and intelligently approaching the issue of scale and the intermittent use of the stadium architecture, the project sinks its 200,000sqm structure into the ground and turns the rocky mountain into one of its main features. It creatively works with the topography and relies on a series of emerging planes to mould the space and help cater for the 40,000 seats it provides. The stadium maximizes the use of on-site material and its visionary design merges landscape and architecture, thus blurring the boundaries between the built and the natural and creating a space that allows the visitor to interact with the stadium activities, much as with the desert landscape itself.

Article source: Bentley Systems, Incorporated

What is now 1,200 acres of sand will soon become a spectacular new community that combines waterways, harbors, lush landscapes, and dramatically designed skyscrapers. Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback (TVS) & Associates, the architectural firm charged with designing the Lagoons in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, envisions the project as seven islands. Each island thematically represents an emirate of the UAE and encompasses several specific, yet interrelated, functions that include central business districts, world-class retail shops, entertainment zones, cultural centers, and mixed-use residential buildings.

Opus Office Tower in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates by Zaha Hadid Architects

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects

One of several unique buildings specified as part of masterplan concept for Dubai, The Opus comprises two structures, conceived as a single cube eroded by a free-form void, which appears to ‘hover’ above ground-level. A pixilated reflective façade renders the cube full by day; by night, it ‘dematerializes’ as light floods the void.

More projects by Zaha Hadid

Articulated through a series of ‘petals’, the Dubai Financial Exchange building makes a powerful architectural statement at the heart of the new waterfront business bay. Comprising a heavy sculptural solid ‘floated’ above a lighter volume of glass, the building successfully accommodates both broker ‘shop fronts’ and a central trading floor area.

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

The Strata Tower’s design utilizes primarily mathematical means in its design to achieve both a poetic, as well as highly pertinent, architecture for the UAE, a region in flux with ambitions for continued rapid growth.
