Areia House is located in Árvore, in an urban allotment very close to the beach of Areia, Vila do Conde. The urban allotment’s license allows the construction of a basement and two floors for a single-family housing, and also an annex for car parking.
The Canine & Feline Hotel is located in Parada, Vila do Conde and the main program consists of temporary dog and cat accommodation, a hotel where the animals stay for a few days, during holidays or professional travel of their owners. The remaining program is a complement to the space’s activity, with a veterinary office, a grooming room, outdoor training areas and a swimming pool for pets.
The program is distributed over three buildings that are interconnected, allowing to create three different areas. This way we got to separate the cat zone from the dog zone, avoiding the meeting of both and reducing the animal noises. In another building we find all the public service spaces.
In the center of Vila do Conde, north of Portugal, we find a small, narrow and empty store, without dividing walls and naked of decor. The storefront opens to Dr. João Canavarro avenue, one of the most importants streets in this city. In the back there is a small window near to the ceiling, which allows ventilation of the space and some light on the north side.
The building facades are preserved without any kind of intervention and the existing window frames are kept to control costs. On the back façade the frame in wood is only painted inside.
The client asked us to design an apartment inside of two fractions on the top of an under-construction building. They wanted a four rooms apartment with unified social areas and increased exterior spaces.
Being under-construction gave us the possibility to introduce a patio around which revolve the kitchen, the dining area and the living room. From here we defined the main axis which runs longitudinally across the house, dividing the social and private areas.
The choice of materials was limited to the ones available in the building so we choose the white lacs and paints to maximize the apartment natural lighting and wood panels in the distribution zones, in a dialogue between the abstract white and the concrete wood.
Rio Mau House is located in the countryside of the outskirts of Vila do Conde. The land plot with about 6800 sqm is surrounded by cultivated fields and pine forest near Serra de Rates.
The family house with a single floor is located in the center of the garden surrounded by some existing pine trees. The car and pedestrian accesses through the north zone are highlighted by an entrance porch and a black concrete paved area.
“Speechless!!! My baby, my dream, surpassed and achieved…”
…with tears in her eyes, on the inauguration day, these were the words of client and friend Daniela Fortunato, model and now also businesswoman.
It is words like these that motivate us and make us proud. The difficulty in creating and constructing an Architectural Work, especially in this case with an extremely low budget: €6,500 (six thousand, five hundred euros) for the design and implementation of a multi-brand men’s clothing store. Yes, just €6,500!! With the added constraint that we only had five weeks from the start of the project to the opening of the store. That’s why we nicknamed this project “LowLowCost”.
Vila do Conde apartment is on the 3rd floor of an 80’s building not very qualified in the design and finishing materials, which is a duplex by the use of the attic area.
The project intentions were to reorganize the spaces, renovate the finishing materials and define a new environment with the furniture design.
Facing South, the living room and the kitchen share an open space with access to the balcony. Facing North, one of the rooms was transformed into an office space and the other remained as the main bedroom.
The small property, with an accentuated slope on the topography, is located in the main street of Touguinha, a small village in the north of Portugal. On site, there are houses on both sides of the plot terrain, an old stone wall at the back and, at the front, there are some crop fields with a small grove in the middle.
On the site, that was being used as a planting field, we found the typical granite walls, a stone pit, some fruit trees and bushes. Those walls were recovered and the trees, the bushes and the stone pit were kept in their original place, in order to preserve the identity of the site.
The strong slope of the topography of about 5 meters between the street and the top of the site defined the planning of the house in two floors, nevertheless it was sought that both floors had direct connection with the outside garden.
Integrated on a housing facility from the mid 90’s, the apartment is a result of a rampant construction period, and maybe for this reason, it was organized in a very uncommon way: the most intimate area was facing to the landscape and the noise; while the collective zone enjoyed the calmness of the backyard.
