Vila Nova de Famalicão Municipal Market Rehabilitation Project in Portugal by Rui Mendes Ribeiro

Sunday, October 3rd, 2021

Article source: Rui Mendes Ribeiro

Historical Background

Opened on September 21st of 1952, the construction of the Famalicão Municipal Market had a dual purpose: on one hand to decongest the old fairgrounds (nowadays D. Maria II Square) and on the other hand to make a more pleasant space with better hygienic conditions.

After a golden period, the Market presented itself, at the date of the intervention, as an obsolete space without a dynamic capacity to attract new and diversified consumers.

House in Famalicão in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal by Pedro Lima da Costa, Arquitectura

Saturday, February 27th, 2021

Article source: Pedro Lima da Costa, Arquitectura

“In 2018, the client challenged us to design his future house with 3 bedrooms, 1 office, 1 living room and 1 kitchen connected to the dining room, in a 660m2 plot located in Requião, Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal.

The terrain is a relatively narrow plot, but with some depth. Having the street to the west and a pine forest to the east, it seemed very clear to us that the implantation of the house would have to be in the longitudinal direction of the plot, safeguarding the privacy of the spaces of greater use and conviviality overlooking the garden. In order to guarantee the best use of the land and solar orientation, the house leaned against the north limit of the plot, thus releasing the largest possible garden and pool area to the south.

Church of S. Tiago de Antas in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal by Hugo Correia

Thursday, August 9th, 2018

Article source: Hugo Correia

The church of S. Tiago de Antas is built in a privileged place with views over the natural landscape and the center of the local town. The building is integrated side by side and harmoniously with the past, which gives it a distinct character and reference for the community, especially for all who cultivate the faith.

The elaboration of the proposal was preceded of a study of the location of surrounding spaces and the integration of the building in the site location. It was not simply limited to the study of an organized implantation in the land site but also an intense study of the history and religious activities associated to the locality. Its implantation works as a unifying element of the existing spaces in the surrounding, such as the Romanesque church (classified as Property of Public Interest since 1958), the mortuary chapel and the cemetery.

The store integrates a housing project designed in the late 60’s, in a composition that reveals a late modernism. The existing space was divided into two distinct zones: a large floor at the ground level and an upper store overlooking the main space and the courtyard to the north.

Palácio Igreja Velha in Vila Nova de Famalicão, Portugal by VISIOARQ – Arquitectos

Thursday, November 17th, 2016

Article source: VISIOARQ – Arquitectos

Built in 1881, in Vermoim – Vila Nova de Famalicão, the Igreja Velha Palace was for many decades the mansion of an important farm, baroque style with two castellated towers and an attached chapel, the neo-gothic style S. Francisco de Assis chapel.

With the introduction of many additions and volumetries that deprived the complex of its features, this project came across many challenges regarding the constructive and functional aspects.
