New building for the EBZ in Bochum, Germany by Gerber Architekten

The European Education Centre for the Housing and Real Estate Industry (EBZ) in Bochum is the sector’s largest education provider in Germany and has been enlarged with the addition of a training and event centre. The design by Gerber Architekten from Dortmund, who were awarded a first prize in a competition, was constructed in just two years. The completed building was inaugurated in the presence of Ina Scharrenbach (Minister of Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Construction and Equal Rights) at the Housing and Real Estate summer party on Thursday 19.07.2018.

The L-shaped new building, together with the existing buildings of the EBZ, creates a spacious forecourt and simultaneously a spatial connection to the neighbouring EBZ buildings. The main entrance of the new building is oriented towards this forecourt. Additional access is possible from the parking area located at the rear of the building. The new building consists of a four-storey building with offices and seminar rooms and a high single-storey building containing two function rooms of different sizes, which can also be opened up into one if required. These two building volumes are linked by an lower intermediate single-storey foyer, providing a central access to the two buildings, resulting in a total gross floor area of 3,000 square metres. Externally, the simple proportions and the restrained dark brick façade blend in harmoniously with the surroundings.

This addition to the EBZ features the use of state-of-the-art technologies, providing a place of learning for students of all ages, a modern workplace for the staff of the EBZ and an innovation laboratory for real estate research topics. The EBZ was founded in Hösel-Ratingen in 1959 and in 1997 moved to the current site in Bochum.
